Does anyone know of nearby (within 1-2 hours) fishing opportunities around Kansas City? I am moving to the northern region of the city and am almost completely unfamiliar with the area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There are large mouth bass, blue gill and crappie in every lake close to you. You probably will find some with channel cats and carp. For trout you will have to travel to Bennet Springs or other Mo. trout parks.

Other than doing the warmwater thing, your closes trout water will be the Niangua River and/or Bennett Springs Trout Park near Lebannon, Missouri.  Believe it or not, Missouri has a lot of different fly fishing opportunities other than a trout park (300+ miles of trout water).

I work at a fly shop in Wichita, about 3 hours south of KC. There are a lot of good opportunites around KC. Milford reservoir as well as marion and marion count lake. All are good for carp, bass, walleye, and marion county lake is especcially good for whipers, i.e. the striped and white bass hybrids. Give me a call at the shop sometime and I would be happy to point you to some good fishing.
