Dusty before I started using furled leaders I use to use the following recipe for trout leaders, the great thing with making your own is the infinite variations and options you have in making the perfect leader for the given situation. The water knot is far simpler than tying blood knots but I’m not sure how good it is for joining fluro as I didn’t use it as a leader material.

Spool of cheap 22lbs BS monofilament like Bayer Perlon
    Spool of 15lbs Maxima monofilament
Spool of 8lbs Daiwa Super Shinobi co-polymer
Spool of 5lbs Daiwa Super Shinobi co-polymer
Spool of 3lbs Daiwa Super Shinobi co-polymer

Tie one to two yards of the 22lbs monofilament to the fly line using the needle knot. This is the sacrificial butt of the leader.

Tie to the butt another one or two yards of the 15lbs Maxima using a four turn water knot.

Tie to this another one or two yards of 8lbs or 5lbs Daiwa Super Shinobi co-polymer using another four turn water knot. This is the tippet.

If you need to make a finer tippet, use one yard of the 8lbs Super Shinobi and then tie a tippet of whatever length you want of 3lbs Super Shinobi to the 8lbs using another four turn water knot.

We seem to have the direct opposite issue here in the UK being cold and exceptionally wet with the rivers high and coloured but at least the fish here won’t suffer and the migratory fish will be able to push up well.

Is the weather you’re experiencing normal for the time of year or one of those blips that are becoming more and more frequent worldwide?

    Cheers Craig,

I will see if I can find Ande over here and knock some up and see how they go on my trip south next week, will also make up a 6# thread based leader and see how they compare.

My freshwater furled leaders are made using Gudebrod thread, mostly mixed colours for a camo effect which are then soaked in Dow Coring’s MH1107 and allowed to dry completely for fishing drys and Xink for nymphs and lures.

BTW is the leader you’re making the Singaporean as shown on this link?

Scott, I think it’s a great whisky and so do others, however like most single malts it all comes down to personal taste, bit like fly rods really!

Yes, the prices shown are GB pounds.

I seriously want to know how to procure a bottle of that scotch, I love scotch and must add that one to my collection.
