Mark, hope things in Ohio are good and that the steelhead will be in your near future. I taught school and coached in Columbus; played Perrysburg one year in lacrosse, and used to hit Lake Erie tribs for steelhead; good times.

Thanks for the kind words, Steve. Hope things are well in Coweta Co.

Zach, I have a lot of respect for Rene Harrop and Mike Lawson; I lived up in Island Park and ran our fly shop and lodge towards the tail end of my first season a while back. There’s something special about seeing Mr. Harrop in his white pickup surveying the Ranch looking for his fish, singular that is. Come summer solstice, if I have a day off, you can find me anchored up on the Henry’s slinging a rusty spinner at the 10pm twilight; uncommon place and honored traditions. Wouldn’t try to articulate what it is they love about how they fish, but all that said, for me, streamer fishing is where it’s at. I’m working on an article about a particular technique that brought those browns to hand the other day and has worked for me in New Zealand, Mongolia and for clients all over Wydaho. T. Wiles makes a good point; we each take our own angles in this fine sport. Trout approval is my only concern 🙂

Hope next time you’re up this way, you’ll let me take you down the South Fork. Would love to put you on some riffles tossing PMDs or hucking streamers in the fall.

    Best to you all,
    ~g

Thanks, Zach; yes, Phil’s great. Met him up in Missoula back in April at the Orvis guide meeting. He’s been very helpful.

Thanks so much, guys. Most generous of you to share some kind words. Headed to Port Sulphur, LA on Sunday for a few days chasing reds; hope to have a few more pics.

To M. Wood re: flies. From the start, I fished almost exclusively a white Chinese goat; seen pictured in a photo or two in the essay. It’s tied on a short piece of copper tubing, the interior of which is plastic lined so as to not chafe the leader. behind that was a inch or so of clear surgical tubing that allowed for a connection between fly and 3/0 hook as both were slightly inserted in to one end of the tubing respectively. To know me is to know I’m a HUGE fan of white streamers and a swimming technique; so given my peculiarity and several eats the first day, I wasn’t interested in varying my approach much.

Other flies that work for taimen are big foam mouse patterns, designed to move significant water and get the fishes’ attention. For the lenok and amur trout, foam flies like Fat Alberts can be used, but we whacked a number of them on smaller (by comparison to the goat) streamers, most notably a black Dawes’ Meatstick.

    Best to you all,

Just picked up a set of Sawyer shoal cut oars with the carbon wrap and counter-balance. Super light and move a lot of water. They’ve been great on the South Fork of the Snake.

Guys, thank you for taking a look and for your kind words. I really appreciate it.

Mike, I’m in and out of Nashville with family in the area, would love to chuck some meat at some stripers or muskie with you sometime.

Mark, we fished Wilson to South Park both days this weekend and had it mostly to ourselves.

Thanks, Corey. That was Klaus’ first trip in a drift boat and was just glad to tag along.

Josh, yep, that’s ol’ Walt. He and I are roommates out here in Wilson. Hope you can get out here in the fall. I’ll tell him you said hi.

Brilliant suggestions, guys. Truly appreciate the recommendations and your time.

Corey, the 1510 looks like it’s the ticket. Thanks.

Picking up the Pelican vibe loud and clear. Thanks, y’all. Follow up question, though… have you used the top load version? model 1434, I believe? Again, thanks everyone.

    Corey,
Yeah, life’s pretty good and working with WorldCast has been fantastic! Heading back out there next week to get some tying done and get set for the season. Holler if you head up that way.

    Jason,
Thanks. Yeah the Pig did us pretty well down there; had a lot going on for a smaller store.

    Be well, all.

Thanks, guys for the kind words. It was a great trip with dad, and the oysters were exceptional.

Corey, I’m familiar with your work and think you may know a few of my buddies at WorldCast. I guide with them in Jackson.

    my best to you both,

    Loren,

That’s great work and most helpful insight. I really appreciate the time you’ve put in responding; certainly want to find the right lenses the first time.

    Again, my sincere thanks,

    Dustin,

Wasn’t LA, but just got back from a three week redfishing trip that hit spots on the GA coast, panhandle, and east and west coasts of Florida. Fished with a 9′ GLoomis GLX 8 wt, which was plenty of stick and great in the wind. In Mosquito lagoon, I fished with a guide who spends Oct. – Nov. in LA and says that rod would be just fine; I’m planning to head to LA next fall myself. It’s an old rod, took it to Alaska in 1998, but a good one.

Another thought depending on cost consideration are the Orvis Access big game rods. I guide up in Jackson Hole and have a 6 wt for streamer and heavy nymph rigs. It’s a client rod that’s seen plenty of abuse and has stood tall. I’d give an 8 wt a hard look if I were buying a new rod for reds on the bayou.

    Best to you,
    ~gh

Btw, I grew up in NW GA. You fish the Hiwassee or Toccoa much?

    Loren,

I’m planning on putting the 28-300 on it. Sounds like you’ve been very pleased with that lens and the 10-24? Looking for a good wide angle/fish eye to pair up with the zoom.

    Curtis,

Really appreciate your comments; thanks for taking the time. Your feedback has me pretty set on the d7000, just can’t find the body-only anywhere. Several lens kits are available options, but I want to put the 24-300 zoom on it.

Best to you and thanks again.
