Back in October, toward the end of the guiding season in Jackson Hole, I had an opportunity through my outfitter, WorldCast Anglers, to fish Mongolia and put together a photo essay for Orvis News linked here…

Those photos along with a number of others can be found on my website at http://www.flycasters.net/#!portfolio then click on the Mongolia tab.

Thanks for taking the time to look.
    Best,

This sort of trout fishing captured my imagination a few years ago.

Thanks so much, guys. Most generous of you to share some kind words. Headed to Port Sulphur, LA on Sunday for a few days chasing reds; hope to have a few more pics.

To M. Wood re: flies. From the start, I fished almost exclusively a white Chinese goat; seen pictured in a photo or two in the essay. It’s tied on a short piece of copper tubing, the interior of which is plastic lined so as to not chafe the leader. behind that was a inch or so of clear surgical tubing that allowed for a connection between fly and 3/0 hook as both were slightly inserted in to one end of the tubing respectively. To know me is to know I’m a HUGE fan of white streamers and a swimming technique; so given my peculiarity and several eats the first day, I wasn’t interested in varying my approach much.

Other flies that work for taimen are big foam mouse patterns, designed to move significant water and get the fishes’ attention. For the lenok and amur trout, foam flies like Fat Alberts can be used, but we whacked a number of them on smaller (by comparison to the goat) streamers, most notably a black Dawes’ Meatstick.

    Best to you all,
    ~gh

Thanks, Zach; yes, Phil’s great. Met him up in Missoula back in April at the Orvis guide meeting. He’s been very helpful.
