Mark SchaferMemberNice stuff, glad someone is able to get on the water this time of year.
Steelhead are in the rivers here, but the kids have me running every weekend lately.

T. WilesMemberGreat winter time nymphing….I miss it up there.
Zach,
Let the snobbery stay amongst the bank watchers, who wait all afternoon for a hatch and rising fish.If you turn over a rock on HF, you’ll find tons of leeches. When I lived out there in 2001, a local guide tipped me in on that, and I had an absolute blast landing some true trophy bows on mohair leeches. When I got back to the lodge, and told some of the guides I had landed a 24″ across the street, one of them scoffed, “You fished streamers on the Ranch???”
The same hypocritcal jerk Only chucked rubber legged stones and PMD nymph droppers all season, and rarely ever landed a fish above 18″, never throwing dries.
They never even tried Island Park Res or Henry’s Lake, where 7-9 lb fish were very catchable in the fall. I had some amazing days getting towed around in my pontoon out there.Feb 23, 2013 at 5:17 am #54204Gordon Hight
MemberMark, hope things in Ohio are good and that the steelhead will be in your near future. I taught school and coached in Columbus; played Perrysburg one year in lacrosse, and used to hit Lake Erie tribs for steelhead; good times.
Thanks for the kind words, Steve. Hope things are well in Coweta Co.
Zach, I have a lot of respect for Rene Harrop and Mike Lawson; I lived up in Island Park and ran our fly shop and lodge towards the tail end of my first season a while back. There’s something special about seeing Mr. Harrop in his white pickup surveying the Ranch looking for his fish, singular that is. Come summer solstice, if I have a day off, you can find me anchored up on the Henry’s slinging a rusty spinner at the 10pm twilight; uncommon place and honored traditions. Wouldn’t try to articulate what it is they love about how they fish, but all that said, for me, streamer fishing is where it’s at. I’m working on an article about a particular technique that brought those browns to hand the other day and has worked for me in New Zealand, Mongolia and for clients all over Wydaho. T. Wiles makes a good point; we each take our own angles in this fine sport. Trout approval is my only concern 🙂
Hope next time you’re up this way, you’ll let me take you down the South Fork. Would love to put you on some riffles tossing PMDs or hucking streamers in the fall.
Best to you all,
~g -
