MemberZach, I noticed the gap too, but it seems just the question was missing and the answer seemed to stand on its own. It did have me wondering if there was something wrong with my iPod for a second though!

MemberOrvis tent sale— got my reconditioned Guide Pros for $50.
If I were paying full retail I probably would have gone with Simms, but for the price it couldn’t be beat. My warranty is the $250 I have left in my pocket. That will buy my next 5 pairs of factory reconditioned waders. ๐

MemberZach, congratulations! All the stress and time spent will be well worth it. Best of luck making it a home.

MemberI feel for you Zach. We’ve had nothing but rain (a little understatement for a nor’easter!) and clouds. Lots of flooding and the rivers are still very high. Hoping to get out for my first striper soon. This weekend is opening day here in CT, but the striper run is due to start any day. Decisions, decisions…

MemberZach, your podcasts are terrific, but where on earth do you get the energy to do them on a weekly basis? If you cut back I’m going to go through withdrawal again.

I’m always very conflicted– I absolutely love fish & chips, but know what it does the the cod population. I love bluefin tuna, chilean seabass, skate, and many more. Unfortunately they can’t sustain the pressure they’re under. At least I can enjoy my cajun catfish!

MemberBill and Zach,
Great job. As someone who fishes for stripers on Long Island Sound, I found it pretty fascinating. The fishing we do is a bit different because of the strong influence of the tides. We can catch stripers quite shallow as they move into feeding positions to catch the baitfish as they get washed around with the currents.
I’m curious about the health of pure striped bass in fresh water. During the winter the big fish migrate south, but some of the smaller ‘holdovers’ remain in the rivers. Whether it’s due to the fresh water or other stresses from the cold or less abundant food, many of the holdovers aren’t as healthy as the ones that migrate. That’s very anecdotal, and it could be for lots of reasons. It was very interesting to hear that they can survive and even thrive in the purely freshwater environment.
Thanks again!

MemberJust tie up something that looks like pelleted fish food. If you really want to get them, throw some real pellets in the water before you throw them the fly. ๐
Koi are pretty omnivorous. If they were domestic, they’ll be used to pellet food. If they’ve been ‘wild’ for long, they’ll feed on whatever is common in the pond.
I keep tropical fish, and it really pisses me off when people release fish that get too big for their tanks. The environment suffers because of their bad planning.

MemberThe reel on my 9 weight that I use for stripers and bluefish is an Orvis Mach V. Hard to get a good salt reel at the price. It does it’s job beautifully– resists salt corrosion, nice smooth drag, and pretty lightweight. I’ve found their customer service to be great.
There is a contingent that look on Orvis as the Walmart of fly fishing. However, some of them turn around and shop at Cabela’s. Go figure. ๐
