I think some of you guys need to read the forum’s rules on using your full name, so we all know who each other are. Its only courteous to the other members who abide by those rules.

Abide by what rules? Either the board administer requires full identification or he doesn’t. Zach doesn’t. Some of us have legitimate reasons for posting anonymously. Here’s mine: A certain percentage of people recognize my name and immediately treat me differently. This happens repeatedly in the real world and I get sick of it. Here, I can be anonymous and be judged from what knowledge or opinions I bring to the board. No worrying about people toadying up to me because they think I’m some kind of celebrity. I hate that.
My intent with this thread was to create a good conversation. I live in the Colorado mountains and up here, we’re buried under another monster winter. That bodes well for next year’s fishing, but it leaves most of us with a severe case of the shack nasties. Except for limited tailwater fishing, trout season is shut down here. This same topic provided an excellent discussion on my local board, but I figured you guys are more white collar than that crowd and might see things differently. And in fact you did.
Finally, Zach, your paternalistic post provoked a horse laugh from me. What the hey do you mean you’re watching this thread carefully? What are you running here, a damn kindergarten? I’m probably older than your old man and I’ll be damned if you’re gonna talk to me like that, so I’ll roll up my tent and be out of here. I post here about once a month anyway, so it’s no big loss. Erase them all, if you wish.
I would have been happy to share my real identity with you via PM or e-mail, but I’ve got no reason to trust you now, nor not much reason to care.

Yes, personally, I object to unsolicited e-mail trying to sell me something, but if you don’t, or if it wasn’t unsolicited, that’s fine with me. Wasn’t trying to be offensive. Mostly it was a comment that the e-mail was just that–trying to sell you something.
I’m actually somewhat symphathetic to the efforts of the guys trying to make a living in the guiding/flyfishing business. I suspect the difference between making it and not can be finding ways to reach into all the corners and make a few bucks here and there–guiding, classes, articles, shows, appearances, etc. “Superstardom” is hard work.
I think the price tag on this thing is pretty hefty considering that you could book Mayer or Ed Engle as a guide for a full week of one-on-one for much less than the price of the class. But I think there are a lot of things in flyfishing that are overpriced just because there are those who want it and have the money. If you’re in that category and you like structured activities like that, then go for it. 🙂 Personally, I could do a lot more fishing with that amount of money.
Nice post, Trigg. I wasn’t trying to needle you, just didn’t understand your point. Yeah, I’m voluntarily on the mailing list so I enjoy being informed of this stuff.
This thing reminds me of an angling beauty contest. There’s just too much talent to make use of it all. Any one of them one-on-one for a week would be cheaper and just as educational, or maybe more so.
Makes me wonder if all of them didn’t get together during the fly fishing shows in Denver last January. After a few rounds of drinks, they said, “hey, what’s the most outrageous thing we could do to rip of the tweedy cane pole crowd?” And this is what they came up with.
Landon, especially, is hard charging when it comes to marketing himself. He’s probably the most amazing angler I’ve ever watched, and I’ve been at this for a half-century. He pushes the envelope but manages to make a nice living as a full-time angler. Most young guides, by my understanding, are taking a few summers off before joining the real world.

First, let me say that these guys (and gal) are an all-star lineup of top Colorado anglers. They don’t get any better, as illlustrated by their numerous books, DVDs and television appearanced.
Yes, I know that Landon Mayer has been the object of vicious attacks from lesser-known guides who troll about on other boards. And he’s taken his lumps on this board as well — witness the guy who posted a year ago about the 8-pound brown Landon put him on. The nay-sayers went crazy and Zach ended up deleting the thread and picture. The poster quit the board and I can’t say I blame him.
Even Zach chimed in to say there were “valid questions” about Landon’s techiques. What questions, exactly? His flies too small? His leaders to wispy? His fish too big?
All that said, the price for this Angler All-Star Game is ridiculous. Three grand? Are you kdding me? I’d hire any one of them for a day at top rates, top it off with a C-note tip and steak dinner, if wanted. But three grand?
Fugghetiaboutit. Anybody with me on this?
