MemberThanks everyone, I really apppreciate the feedback. I’ve just been really busy fishing and working, and haven’t had the opportunity to post again. The reason I started this topic is that I’m going to be doing a presentation at Cabelas in Washington on women in fishing, and the more information I can gather the better.
I’ve worked at a fly shop for the past 4 years, and I don’t think that the number of my female customers has increased much. Most women I know fish with their husband, and that’s how they were introduced to it. I also find it interesting that most men, from you guys on this forum to guides that I know and all in between, are very supportive and positive about seeing women involved, yet there is still this misconception that its a “man’s” sport. Even guys who wouldn’t necessarily want their wives to go out with them still don’t have a problem with other women doing it.
I definitely think that getting your daughters involved is huge. A lot of girls, I think, might be drawn away from fishing in their teenage years, but many will find their way back as adults. I find it amazing how experiences from my childhood influence what I choose to do as an adult.
Thanks again guys.

MemberFinish out the local steelhead season.
Fish lakes in BC interior May/June.
Ontario in July for Gar, etc…
Maybe late August early Skeena steelhead.
Work the fly shop and guide Fraser River and tribs on days off all fall, so no time off.
Then more steelhead after that.adrienne
MemberHi Rick.
It depends on the price range you have. Sage makes their Z-Axis rods in an 8’6″ and 9′ 5 wt with a small grip designed to fit small hands, but they are pricey, though beautiful to cast. Sage also made a pink Breast Cancer rod (8’6″ 5wt in the VT2 series) last year, and although they are sold out I might know where you could find a blank to build up. I haven’t had the chance to cast the Wright and McGill but they sure are pretty.
The TFO is a good rod, but fairly stiff. I personally find it hard to control my wrist when using that rod. You might want to find her something that is a little lighter and slower. If you want to stick under $200 – check out the Echo rods. Great value for the money. -
