After reading Eric’s post about his pending trip out west I started thinking that I must be the only person on this board who does not “destination fish”. Which got me thinking even more…where does everyone on here live and what do you do, “to pay the mortgage”?

While I can’t really say that I “destination fish” often, I did take a big trip this summer and hope to be able to do one destination each year.

I live just outside of Charleston, WV. Have 2 children, a 3 year old and a 2 year old. My wife works shift work so I’m babysitting much of the time. I work for the state govt. which has…

pro – I work in the field covering all 55 counties. When the day has ended, or when I have plenty of leave hours to burn, I get to fish the length and breadth of the state (provided I can get home before my wife blows a gasket). I’ve assembled a personal database of nearly 1000 different wild trout streams in WV so it is sort of my ‘type of fishing’ to canvas as many of them as I can in my lifetime, even if many are very very tiny native brook trout streams that most people wouldn’t bother with. Sort of a pioneer spirit.

con – The pay is awesome, I literally get paid like hundreds of dollars a year (note sarcasm). My family income is such that I would never be able to afford destination fishing. So, I took the bull by the horns and started my own side business; I make split bamboo fly rods, fishing videos, photography, etc. The few coins that I profit from said business either gets put back into the business, buys gear, or pays for trips (i.e., my recent week in Montana). Problem is that with my day job, my kids, a ton of volunteer time spent with Trout Unlimited activities, and a workaholic wife w/no babysitter to fall back on, I don’t get much time to actually “run” my business.

The facts:
41, Tasmanian born, saltwater bred, came to fly fishing too late.
Divorced once, remarried now, 3 stepkids.

Once had a real job, 20 years in newspapers mainly political reporting.

Now fly shop manager, guide, writer sometime photographer in Cotter Arkansas, on the banks of the White River.

Actually its about 1/4 of what I was making when I left Oz 7 years ago. But I couldn’t go back to that.

First 3 years in the country I got to travel a lot, but it seems time is the crucial issue now.
So far the list of licences includes Tasmania, Australia, Alaska, Baja, Montana, Idaho, New York, Wyoming, California, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Michigan.
Now  Im introducing travel to the flyshop, and everyone thinks its about getting free trips  😮 LOl.

But yeh I miss the travel seeing new water, Im jonesing for the smell of the salt again. Want to go back to Montana/Idaho, more Alaska and I want to break my bonefish  cherry etc etc.

But what I need to do with my stash is buy a house, and a new boat. Priorities.

If I tried to fit a fishing trip in amongst a schedule like Eric describes, I would be either sleeping in the garage or hiring Zach to help me through the divorce paperwork.

I am an almost 60 year old strategic planning consultant. (2nd Career) retired from USAF after 28 years in 1996.  I live in Slapout, Alabama and destination fishing is always the first thing on my to do list.  Once I do it, it always goes back on the list at the top.  Life is too short to waste one day thinking up reasons not to go fishing.

I travel regionally to fish, live in Orlando and go to the Mosquito Lagoon on weekends, used to live outside of New Orleans and fished their often, have also lived and fished – Montgomery, Auburn, Birmingham, Mobile, Charleston (SC) –

Hello all,

Grew up in New Orleans, spent the last 12 years practicing law in Baton Rouge – Geaux Tigers! – hung ’em up at the end of 2006. Now, as a recovering lawyer, I work part time in the fly shop in New Orleans and try to find other ways to make some change. Never married, no kids, awesome girlfriend with a busy schedule that allows for plenty fishing.

I chase redfish in the marsh about an hour from New Orleans when it’s not 100 degrees outside, and I handle the travel program for the fly shop which is how I manage to swing my destination fishing (this year to Jackson Hole and the Bahamas). Also drive to Arkansas or the GSMNP for trouts.

Been out of the country for most of the summer so it is good to be back and see how far Zach has taken the site. Cheers,
