Tim AngeliMemberThanks Zach, I appreciate the advice.
Tim AngeliMemberI’ll throw my hat in with a couple for the ‘photo of the day’ theme you’ve been running lately. All are from the North Island, NZ.

One last grip and grin:

Tim AngeliMemberAwesome fish, and nice pictures too.
Tim AngeliMemberHaha.
Tim AngeliMemberThat’s a special place, especially this time of year.
Tim AngeliMemberCheers guys, glad you enjoyed the pictures.
Tim, are you logging (i.e. counting) all your fish?
Nah, just have the memories.
Tim AngeliMemberHope you stay safe Mike.
Tim AngeliMemberFor the next few days Paul came down to join the fray and we faced some tougher fishing. Definitely can’t complain though, as we still managed to wrangle quite a few good fish.
Paul got a nice one on the streamer:

Then we found a pod of fish rising to emergers. 6 browns, all within 1 meter of the bank and only spread across about 5 meters of river. By about 1% strategy and 99% pure luck we managed to stick every one of them, with the biggest tipping the scales at about 4-5lbs. I realized that I’m a fisherman first, and a hack photographer second, because I didn’t bother getting my camera out while the action was on.
We picked up a few more nice browns on streamers before the sun decided to set:

The next day was full of the excitement of getting the opportunity to check out some new water, but ultimately proved to be a disappointment when the river was too high to cross only two pools up from the access. We managed to keep the skunk off though, if only barely:

The last day also found us on new water, and again, we managed to rustle up a couple of fish. I think this guy lives at the front of the buffet line:

Billboard on the side of the “highway”:

And that wraps it up. It’ll probably be the last trip for a couple months for me, but if so, it was a great one to go out on.
Hopefully we’ll meet again soon:

Tim AngeliMemberSounds like a hell of a week.
Tim AngeliMemberI have the (now outdated) Simms Pursuit Wading Shoes.
Tim AngeliMemberNice pictures Joel. It was good to finally get the opportunity to fish together while you were here. Glad to hear you got into it down south.
Tim AngeliMemberWow Doug, just wow.
Tim AngeliMemberAwesome photos Loren.
Tim AngeliMemberGlad to hear you guys got into it down there.
Tim AngeliMemberPhoto #6 is awesome.
Tim AngeliMemberNeal,
The musky and smallmouth fishing in Lake St. Clair is supposed to be incredible, so I’m sure you would enjoy that. It’s also your closest option to Detroit.
However, if you’re more interested in chasing trout, I would highly recommend checking out the upper Manistee and/or Au Sable rivers. You can base yourself out of Grayling, which is a little over 3 hours from Detroit if traffic is good. It sounds like you’re looking for a guide, and considering your fondness for chucking streamers, I’d highly recommend looking into either Ray Schmidt (although I don’t think he guides much at all anymore, http://www.schmidtoutfitters.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=203) or Russ Madden (http://www.hawkinsflyfishing.com/fishing_guides.php#russmaddin). Both of those guys are streamer junkies, and are also responsible for some of the best streamer patterns out there (circus peanut, mad pup, rattlesnake, etc.).
The Manistee and Au Sable are the flagship rivers in Michigan, so if you’re only going to fish Michigan for a couple days, that’s good water to check out. That is also where a lot of the “Kelly Galloup streamer fishing” techniques and fly patterns that have become so popular were originally developed, and since you enjoy streamer fishing so much, it might be fun to make the trip to that area.
Depending on how the season/weather turns out, you might also have a chance to catch the tail end of the Hex hatch (although it’ll likely be done by then), or have some good night-time mousing, if you’re into that.
PM me if you want specifics.
Tim
Tim AngeliMemberI have only fished the 389, but have heard that the whole LL series is great.
Tim AngeliMemberThe LL rods are sweet, and the 389 in particular.
Tim AngeliMemberLooks like a great day Lando.
Tim AngeliMemberYou should check out the Clark’s Cicada…courtesy of Clark Reid, who is a member here. In my opinion, the best natural cicada imitation. If you know they’re eating cicadas, the Clarks is a good bet.

And a full step-by-step from Clark himself can be found here:
