I fished Casselman for the first time last week, and preferred it over the Savage, (and any other trout stream in MD )Pretty good afternoon hatch.( Cahils, sulphers, midges, hendricksons) I caught 8-9 in an afternoon, which for you guys out west aint much, but I was glad see trout again since moving from Colorado. I was surprised at the size of the fish and the fight on the line for MD.

    Mark,

I’m from Annapolis. We’ve talked before about flyfishing in MD. Access is tough I’ve found on the bay, especially if you don’t have a boat. I may be on to a spot to wade. Going to try it in the next few days.
I’ll pm you and may be we can go sometime.

I’ll be “guiding” a buddy whose never been before. The water’s still pretty chilly here in MD so I think I’ll give it a try. Hadn’t been all winter – hope I get to fish!

    Thanks Bob!

I thought it might be something like that. I may try it this weekend. I’m glad to see ya on the rebound. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Not like most of us, I’m sure you got much more on your mind than fishing. Thanks

    Mike,

http://www.riversmallies.com/ has a list of available shuttle services in the area. That might be helpful.

    Tim,

I’ve fished the Frying Pan, but the Platte was my home river when I lived in CO. Mysis shrimp are the ticket on the Frying Pan. But I’ve never fished there that time of year. The shrimp come out of the reservoir, so fish as close to the dam as possible.

As far as the Platte, Spinney Ranch and Eleven Mile Canyon are both great tailwaters. ( sorry my CO brothers-the wors is already out!) Your right with the midges & bwo. Get ready to go small! #20-22 was pretty standard for that time of year, but some guys go even smaller. The standard patterns in those sizes are fine. Brassies, peasent tail’s, etc. We used to catch a ton of fish on what we called a MT MIDGE. (brass bead head, red micro tubing, tan dubbed collar)

By the way. If you want to fish those areas you may want plan your trip around Hoosier Pass being open that time of year. Its a pretty long drive from the Frying Pan to the South Platte if the pass is closed. I’d call the hwy dept. I think they don’t open the pass until well in spring because of avalanche danger.

    Enjoy your trip!

Thanks. I caught it on the South Platte near Spinney. There’s monster fish in that section. Instinctive and conditioned makes sense to me. This fish

That helps a great deal. Do you think that the fish get “patterned”? Or are they making a more conscience decision

in reply to: Fishing Western Maryland #16645

Thanks anyway.I’m adjusting to the fishing scene here. I did fish a local stream last week and some how didn’t see another soul the 2 hours I was on the water. Caught two small fish. Not what I’m accustomed to back in Colorado, but it was still good to be out of the house.
