Joel, yes indeed the roll cast is about the only option on these waters. Just to expand, I used a Z-axis 9′ 6wt on this stream, Ha. My friend brought out the new 7′ 4wt Helios (what a great rod by the way) because of concerns about the canopy. Oh well, that didn’t last long but it did cast well under the trees (still roll cast about 85%).
Kevin, interesting fact – my mother-in-law is listing the property as a real estate agent, that’s how I got to fish. You can buy the land if interested (and have a few $$$).
I graduated from 27th grade 😮 and spent the better part of my twenties studying. Although I don’t regret any part of my training I do wish I had a memory of skipping school and catching a big fat hog like yours. Nice fish, great pics.
BTW, Mike, what’s that in your right pocket? Hope your not picking up bad habits (tippet or chewbacka?)
Orvis was a “private label” customer of Gudebrod and it is possible that they are still making thread for Orvis but I’m not positive. The only difference between the Orvis branded thread and regular Gudebrod was the labeling and the color selection. It is still not “commonly” known who is making Orvis thread but they recently changed their packaging and are now selling thread only as individual wrapped products.
Randy, this won’t answer your question directly but have you checked out the “writing” section of this board? There are some great posts there with tons of recommendations on books to read (good reviews also). I have cut/pasted over two pages of books for my wish list. I gave a copy to my wife and she gets me a few as presents here and there. Great way to build up your library.

Joel, inform me a bit on the Outfitters exam. What kind of topics did you study and what is involved in the actual exam (written, oral, etc). Do you have to pass the exam to be an outfitter vs a guide? I’ll show my ignorance and ask the question – what exactly is an outfitter and what benefits are there in becoming one? I have always assumed that the benefits are more related to one’s business model but I really am interested to know if there are tax benefits or can you then subcontract guides or get deals on equipment.
