Josh . . . I really like the fly shots. Nice application of the black background, next we can get you up with some white/colored backgrounds, which are a bit more challenging. Those are great flies, did you tie them? Nice.
In the future, you will need to get a front reflector to bounce some light on to the front of the flies. Alternatively, off-camera flash works better but is more costly. Overall very strong work and it looks like you were having fun and learning!!!
I am pleased to see more people shooting flies. It really is an area of fly fishing photography that has been lacking. Glad that my posts and tutorial are helping people. I am a nerd at heart, ha. It is one thing that I can give back to the community for all the help provided to me in other areas like landscape, portraits, etc.

I do a Bonefish trip every first week in December in Isla Morada. It is, IMHO, the greatest time to chase the ghosts. I fish with Greg Poland http://www.gregpoland.com. Zach . . . I did something like that recently for friends after a fishing trip. I put two pictures of the trip and a few flies in the shadow box and also had one of flies attached to the leader which I coiled up and pinned in place.
Michael Phillippe . . . I am very sorry to hear your sad news. The thought of losing my dog wrenches my gut. Here is what I came up with from your original image. Over a year ago I started charging for my medical macro photographs. What an experience it has been. First lesson learned: medical device companies pay! Second lesson learned: they expect quality shots for the money! Third lesson learned: it is very thankless, demanding, challenging, unsexy work! During this time I have been incorporating the photographic macro techniques to fly tying. Final lesson learned: fly fishing industry doesn’t pay (at least not as well) and it is still a lot of work!
Greatest lesson learned: artistic directors and newly graduated marketing girls can be a tremendously difficult to work with, aagghh. They often require multiple revisions and even complete re-shoots which suck the life out of you.

I do all my fly tying on a Dyna King Trekker. Wouldn’t trade it for the world. The customer service is awesome. Vises are a personal thing and opinions are all over on the topic. For the money, the Trekker is a great vise. Check out Fly Art or any of my previous tutorials here; all were done on a Trekker. I have both sets of jaws (standard and midge) and tie huge saltwater flies as well as small midges and anything in between.
I really want a new sexier vise, one with a bigger presence. However, I keep coming back to my faithful workhorse Trekker. Haven’t really found the spark to trade up despite the urge.
