Ronnie, those gurglers are something I need to tie.
Mike F., I fished my hopper creations this weekend (not the one pictured above) and although they were my crappy first ties, I had trouble getting them to stay right side up. The hair is not long (or thick) and the foam is not long on top. Anyone else have issues that may cause this?
Very nice! I would call it a success. That was a nice brown. I really wish I had that box of hoppers. Know what all patterns were in there?
I have found that the less I put on top of the fly(wings, indicator foam, ect…) the better it floats upright… Just some food for thought…
Thanks Mike. The above is contrary to what I’ve been reading everywhere else. Not saying you’re wrong, just the first time I’ve heard it. Most people say the more on top keeps it upright better.
Here are some I like to tie. I’m a big fan of damsels because both trout and warmwater fish dig them.
I like this. I just cut some damsel bodies out last night. I really wasn’t sure how to tie them yet. I used the river road creation body cutters. Maybe just some tying thread with peacock hurl around it then tie the foam in? Not sure whther to add legs or not. Maybe some micro legs?
I drive an Acura MDX, good for everything except off road (although it does have AWD). I am drooling over the toyota tacomas. That will be my next vehicle, hands down.
You mention a Taurus ultralight .357 – I’d steer you towards anything by S&W or Ruger before you went Taurus. I’ve got two, a J-frame-ish .357 and a lightweight 4″ .41 mag. The .357 has been OK (awful, awful trigger), but the .41 has had parts come off on me. I originally got the .41 as a “woods” gun, but I won’t trust it at this point.

Hey I like guns just about as much as fishing. No worries. Any specific models you like with S&W or Ruger? I used to want the Ruger Alaskan. I just don’t want to spend a lot of $$ on something I will be packing just for camping/fishing.
In all seriousness, the gun is a workhorse. It was a police issue, so it’s durable, accurate and solid steel. That way, if you run out of bullets it doubles as a club.
Is a Ruger centerfire auto really accurate enough to hit a belly-crawler even at a few feet?
With snake shot, absolutely. However, normal target shooting, it is dead on accurate. Maybe your problem was operator error?
Those are great photos of a great variety of fish.
Now, not to be argumentative, but couldn’t you just walk away from all of the snakes? Is there a need to kill them? I lived in Alabama, Arizona and California, fishing and hiking around venomous snakes all the time, and never felt it necessary to kill them.
I agree with you Andrew. The gun for me is a last resort, if it comes down to me or him. I always go the other way first. Sometimes that isn’t enough. I have lived here my whole life and 98% of the time, all it takes is respecting their space. However, there is that 2% where deadly force is necessary. Especially with moccasins, because they will chase you. And they move a lot better through water than I do. I don’t just see a snake and start shooting. In fact, I have killed maybe one or two my whole life.

I just went over to The Drake, which used to be a great source of trip reports with fantastic pics, but I was pretty disappointed. I think a lot of the guys who were posting those awesome threads have moved on now.
We have had some great trip reports here as well. Let’s get some going again!

Nothing too fancy. Blue crab claws sauteed in white wine/butter sauce. Added some parsely and parmesan cheese after they were done.
Matt I have to head up to Tennessee pretty soon. Care to do a bit of fishing while I’m in the neighborhood.
Yea dude. Just depends on when. I am busy the next 2-3 weekends. Weekdays after work might be a possibilty.
