Went to a local warmwater creek Saturday morning hoping to catch a gar on the fly. Last weekend a guy caught several and landed two. As usual, when I go, all I hear is “you should have been here last weekend.” However, the catching wasn’t bad. It started slow, and we had a cold front a couple of nights in a row. However, I remember hearing when fishing is slow, try to use a smaller bait. It made all the difference.
I hooked a solid 2lb bass that squirmed of as I was trying to get my camera out. By far the most bass I have ever caught here.
This is what I call my aquarium hole. I have caught or seen about 10 different species in this pool each time I go.
The problem is it is very clear and usually the fish can see you before you get a good shot at them. There is usually a 3lb bass that cruises here. You may be able to see it in this pic: (upper middle)

Well after that eventful morning I went home to eat some lunch and rest before I headed to hang out with the girlfriend. I received a text from her saying she might work late, so I figured I would check up on the smallmouth while I wait.
I decided to pack some heat this time for snakes and because the last time I heard lots of coyotes. I admit it’s not the ideal snake gun, but better than nothing.
I had plans to fish upstream since I had never waded that section, but as soon as I entered the creek there were some spin fisherman working down. So I headed downstream. They caught up quick and just sloshed right through the water I was fishing as well as further downstream.

Now, not to be argumentative, but couldn’t you just walk away from all of the snakes?

Now, not to be argumentative, but couldn’t you just walk away from all of the snakes? Is there a need to kill them? I lived in Alabama, Arizona and California, fishing and hiking around venomous snakes all the time, and never felt it necessary to kill them.
I agree with you Andrew. The gun for me is a last resort, if it comes down to me or him. I always go the other way first. Sometimes that isn’t enough. I have lived here my whole life and 98% of the time, all it takes is respecting their space. However, there is that 2% where deadly force is necessary. Especially with moccasins, because they will chase you. And they move a lot better through water than I do. I don’t just see a snake and start shooting. In fact, I have killed maybe one or two my whole life.
I also live in AL and lemme tell you that those moccasins are A-gressive.
I am a ninny muggins about snakes and seriously they have chased me out of the water on the Cahaba river before. Very territorial and if it is mating season, I dont even try because they are out and about and I am not paying enough attention.
I agree about not killing them but if its me or them im going to have to go with me. Cheers.

With snake shot, absolutely. However, normal target shooting, it is dead on accurate. Maybe your problem was operator error?

I’d considered that, but immediately dismissed it as a ridiculous possibility.
In all seriousness, the gun is a workhorse. It was a police issue, so it’s durable, accurate and solid steel. That way, if you run out of bullets it doubles as a club.

I am eyeing a taurus .357 ultralight as my next gun. It would be an easy carry gun compared to the P89.
Matt – in all seriousness, the only problem with the Ruger is that it will never give you a real reason to replace it.
You mention a Taurus ultralight .357 – I’d steer you towards anything by S&W or Ruger before you went Taurus. I’ve got two, a J-frame-ish .357 and a lightweight 4″ .41 mag. The .357 has been OK (awful, awful trigger), but the .41 has had parts come off on me. I originally got the .41 as a “woods” gun, but I won’t trust it at this point.

Hey I like guns just about as much as fishing. No worries. Any specific models you like with S&W or Ruger? I used to want the Ruger Alaskan. I just don’t want to spend a lot of $$ on something I will be packing just for camping/fishing.
