A great fly fishing guide is Scott Owens – http://captainscottowens.com/ – 912-270-7300. July can be good for the big jacks in the sound; redfish might be sluggish.

    Have fun.

Check out “Fly Fisherman’s Guide to Saltwater Prey:…” by Aaron Adams. Good discussion of saltwater bait and imitative patterns. Not a beginner’s book, but it looks like you know how to tie. Saltwater patterns don’t require any unusual techniques and frankly, I usually find saltwater fish less critical of my tying ability than the trout I have have cast to.

President Eisenhower enjoyed fishing the Augusta National ponds, particularly the pond on the par 3 course, during his visits to Augusta after his presidency. Cliff Robertson had the ponds stocked for that purpose and I have heard that some of the members still occasionally fish the par 3 pond.

It has to be Kalik – nothing better when coming off the Bahamian flats.

I frequently use 20 or even 30 lb for bite tippet on 12 – 15 lb leader when snook/baby tarpon fishing. A double or triple surgeons knot has always been sufficient, and it is easy and quick to tie.

When going a little larger, say 20 lb tippet to 50 lb bite tippet, I use an improved blood knot – simply double the smaller tippet and tie the usual blood knot – about 4-5 wraps for the smaller doubled tippet and 2-3 wraps for the bigger stuff. Be sure to moisten the knot when drawing tight. This is Flip Pallet’s recommended knot for tarpon – if its good enough for him, it will work for me.

There is plenty of great fishng near West and any of the fly shops there can put you on great water. Check every morning for latest reports. Blue Ribbon Flies in West published a weekly email with reports of what is happening – check their website for how to subscribe.

You are also close to the Henry’s Fork (45 minute drive) – the railroad ranch can be tough but it is classic dry fly water, certainly worth considering if you want to drive over for the day.

If time and money permit, get a guide for a day and float the Box Canyon or the Madison – great way to cover lots of water and catch lots of fish.

I’m jealous – it will be a great trip – Have Fun!

    This is a great thread.

I’ve never tried taking flies onboard – always checked them, but it sounds like many of you have had no problems taking your flies in carry on luggage. Where have you been able to do this? I fly to/from Atlanta to Florida and Bahamas – any problems with these airports?

Also, in Bahamas recently, my luggage exceeded 40 lbs – Bahamas Air was not going to let me take all of my luggage; finally convinced them to let me since I was an international passenger – but I’m concerned about my next trip down there. Any one have any recent experiences with Bahamas Air?

    Thanks. Keith
