    Dear Joao

Wow…nice info ! Beautiful fish you’ve catched there.
I have been on Madeira 3 times, and wondered each time if there are some good trout fishing anywhere.
We visited Azores last year and catches a lot of fine small trout in the volcano lakes there.
In April 2016 we’re going to Funchal again, and then I wonder if you could help me with a little “fishing-info” ?
Where can we get a licence for example ?
And wich streams are accessible without a 15 km levada walk ? ?
On the Azores we paid only 1 EUR for a 3 month licenca….in two copies with stamps and all….crazy…

    Any help appreciated

    Cheers

    …see this Azores lake…wow…

    Hi!

I can´t be sure if I’m gonna be here next here by that time, but there is a guide service in the island that is quite good in the service. If you want you can search for Madtrout on facebook, youtube, tripadvisor…

The licence is similar to Azores and there is a couple of places with easy access from road without the 15km of levada ;). Places like Curral das Freiras, Seixal, Ribeira da Janela, Sao jorge…all moutain streams, sometimes hard to walk and the trouts almost always under the 10inch mark, but nice fighters to catch on light gear!

Any help I can provide feel free to ask!

Leave you with one of my last prizes in the streams, tight lines!

    Hi folks!

Went for a quick trip on a nearby stream to find if trouts are living there…here’s what if found.

And a few more…all with a tweaked PT nymph with UV dubbing…in bad shape after some strikes…

Got to go to some ohter streams to find new fishing ground…eheheheh

    ehehehe

Thats an optical illusion, the line is over the hook keeper and not through…dont even use it to put hooks…

    But nice eye Mike!

Mike, have you already been in Madeira?

No Zach, and I dont know if its even documented…
The only fresh water fish besides trouts are eels, I think they are native. Plenty of saltwater game!

Madeira island is about 740.7 km²(aprox. 286 sq mi), 57kmx22km. And the highest peak is 1862meters. And lots of valleys almost all with all year water.

Yes, I think that from the US you must came through Lisbon, or some other european city.

For fishing in the island we have what you need if fly fishing in the streams, there is a guide service for fly fishing in the island that have all the gear needed, and that take care of the licences required. If you came for the saltwater game, its the same but with much more offer.

    Hi Zach!

Yes I live in Madeira, and yes my first language is Portuguese. They do still make Madeira wine and still as delicious as before…eheheheh

The government introduced in the 50’s both rainbows from the US and brown trout from Portugal mainland, the brown trout only was repopulate for some times and its very hard to find one now(just like that lonely trout), the rainbows are repopulate every year with 10cm individuals, but I’ve seen numerous times small ones with less than 5cm, that made me thinking, as others, that the rainbows has found some way to mate and reproduce. What I think is
    rare outside the US…

They are not very big in the streams, can reach a max of 300/500g, in some reservoirs they grow to over a kilo.

I can do as you ask and start a thread with Madeira trouts and some pics.

    Hi!

This is my first reply/post here, saw this article online and just love it!! I’m from Portugal and living in Madeira Island, only moutain streams over here, most of them beyond reach because of the geography of the island and I just hope that my rainbows are hanging in there just like that lonely brook trout.

And i tottaly agree when you say –

“There is a certain magic in fishing small streams. You lose the size-ism we are all accustomed to as anglers. Your expectations are recalibrated, fitted to appreciate the best the water has to offer, and this is a good thing.”

Thank you so much for the post!
