i am using nikon nef files if that is any help, but here goes. open file in ps make exposure or wb adjustments. make further curves adjustments. make hue/saturation adj. convert to lab color, enter channels, select lightness channel. unsharp mask to your desire. mode convert to rgb color and save as a tiff file. psd files are lossless too but less universal than tiffs. this is all with the camera settings on nothing for adjustments and less contrast in contrast mode on a d100 or d1x (what i am familiar with). sharpening in lab color mode/lightness channel eliminates a lot of colored noise that comes from sharpening.works for me.
Mike A- these cameras are tougher than i expected. i have had a d100 for four years now and several dunkings that actualy made the camera shut off, and when dried out worked perfectly again. i don’t recommend this but it took it. i carry the cam in a small dry bag in a backpack for serious water where a dunking involves swimming. for everything else it is in a zoom case on my back all day. it is a tool and needs to be out there taking pics to be of any value. i have yet to dunk my d70 but i just started using it in the field and it is a little lighter to carry. they are both getting very reasonable on the used market.
Richard and PS- you guys are right on here. most of the editors out there don’t understand the digital workflow as well as they should (being editors and all) i have had several tell me they can’t use digital and not realizing that everything is digital now so if you start with film you are one generation behind already. resample upsizing in ps going up 10 percent at a time works very well and holds up. raw is clearly the only way to go jpeg is just too muddy in the shadow detail after publishing and won’t allow the postprocessing without degradation. folks are learning and very soon digital is going to be the only way to go.
richard- how has the performance of your d200? any banding issues? i am ready to upgrade and this clearly seems like the camera.your limit will be the buffer. you can shoot a burst in continous for as long as the buffer will allow, probably with the remote as well. i am not familiar with the d70 but the buffer will probably only take around 10 shots continously in raw. lots more in jpg if you don’t need them published.
Zach, you may be going at this from the wrong direction. if you are submitting slides you usualy leave it up to the publisher to scan them. they usualy use drum scanners which will produce a 100 mb+ image. no scanner under $200 will do what you want it to. the best buy in a scanner for slides is probably the nikon 4000. will produce an image of around 60mb and cost around $500 used. with the d70 shot in raw you should be able to produce a 30 mb tiff file. is this not big enough? where did you come up with the 17mb majic number?
