Do the Simms boots run pretty true to size, or should I go one size up?
.Yes and No, they are true to size if you are wearing only a pair of street socks. But 1 size up is needed for me with a pair of light wool socks and the 3mm neoprene feet of my waders.

Tim, the right color is important. I ended up with at least one non girly-girl. When I asked her if she wanted her own fly rod, her answer was “do they come in camo?”
She is as outdoorsy as an 8 year old can get. Her idea of fun is turkey hunting in the morning, lining up pop cans to shoot with a bb gun, making dirt jumps and not brushing her hair.
I have three daughters, the non oldest is in the picture above. We own a piece of property and have a decent pond chock full of pumpkinseed and largemouth. My kids are lucky enough to be “bored” fishing the pond all summer. The 8 year old can cast very well with the sage 470 or scott f703. This spring the oldest one will be doing weekenders with me all around central pa. It’s time for her first spinner fall.
There are a surprising number of very good fly rods for kids as I have come to find. Thanks guys for all your input. I’ll let you know what she gets.

Out of curiosity why would you want to do a B and W sequence?. Is it a ” look” thing ?? or is the color distracting from the point of the sequence somehow?

Are you looking for a set of lenses to cover a variety of situations and willing to accept some compromises to get that or looking for the “best” macro lens and the “best” wide angle zoom????
Are you going to focus on macro as your main imagery or are you looking to cover a bunch of bases.
If your going down the macro route – how far????? and what are taking pics of???
The 105 VR is a great lens
Buzz is right on- “Photography – – – it’s all about compromises”
There are techniques for trying to maximize sharpness- a tripod with a serious head /mirror lockup/cable or remote shutter release etc.
One of the most overlooked is diffraction. Stopping down tooo far , while it increases DOF also introduces optical effects that cut against “the sharpest possible image from a specific lens”. You mentioned a number of lenses and each of them will have a narrow band of F-stops which will yield the maximum amount of resolved detail for the sensor you are using. They will also have a range of focused distance (magnification) at which they excel.
For instance – I have a 105 VR Nikkor- ok lens at 1/2 life size at f11-16. Get closer ie- life size and it sucks. Stop down to f22 and it sucks.
If I need to get closer ie- life size and greater I switch to Zeiss Luminar microscope type objectives and bellows and if I need more Dof than f11- 16 I start focus stacking.

Best thing is to work out the the optimal paramaters for the lenses you have if you are looking for max sharpness and go from there – in terms of what you need to do to get outside those and stay happy.
As far as photography versus fly fishing… I have pretty much quit fly fishing and fly tying- 2 years and counting- I’m in rehab:))) . I was doing hardcore Spey fishing for big warmwater species ( 40″plus Channel Cats and Carp) and meditative bamboo/brookie and Tenkara stuff till I got hooked on taking pics of aquatic bugs and got sucked into the toilet bowl of trying to understand and explore the broader ecology of aquatic environments.:))))))
Tim- the lightbox would get you going in the right direction , adding removable/different color- gold/silver reflective panels inside will also be handy. I would be hugely wary of bulbs as a light source and the reflector type heads. You will find the reflector heads pretty redundant and there tends to be a lot of “drift” in intensity and color output of bulbs making what you want to do a chore.
A couple of speedlight type flashes will give you tons
