As by far the least experienced photographer of anyone here…let me rephrase…as someone who happens to own a camera and nothing more…assume my feedback is from a Joe Schmoe perspective…just a subjective opinion.

I actually like the 2nd picture just as it is.  For 2 reasons.  First, for some reason I am really digging photos right now that have softer tones.  And that particular photo does a good job of that.  Secondly, and this is where I show my lack of expertise…I actually like the “reds” in that shot.  Several others said they would tone it down a little but for some reason I think that adds to the shot.  I like the reds on the rocks and the suggestion of reddish tones in some of the brush behind the subject.  To me it gives the shot a real earthy sense.

The first shot I guess I just cant quite get a grip on.  For some reason the net doesnt help the photo.  Not because its a net but maybe because it gives the shot a klunky feel to it.

BTW…how much PP was done on that second shot so far?

    Not much.

Carter: I like the second shot .. I do think that maybe it could benefit from a soft background. It might breakup all of the lines from the branches and help to focus the viewer on the fisherman.

John: I LOVE how sharp the fish is in that first shot!

I dunno .. I do think the GnG has its place. Sometimes it just nice to see someone with a big fish and a big smile. Plus, like Zack said .. I’m sure it sells magazines.

Solid shots Corey. I’m liking #3!

Aaron….. your shot of the guy with the bass is what I’m after. The photo is all about the fish and doesn’t scream out, “Hey…look at me and my fish!” On the other hand, the angler is still identifiable in the photo so he’ll have a record of his catch. The best of both worlds IMHO.

    John…thanks for the tips…..most appreciated.

I’m telling you all……someone (Zach) needs to memorialize this stuff and put it in book form. Fisherman/photogs would eat it up.

I’m constantly impressed with the amount of talent on this website. Zach….you have something special here. Thanks for posting guys!

Man, this is a great forum and the conversations are already [s:1bi5nm9q]influencing[/s:1bi5nm9q] helping the way I am approaching my photography. Thanks!

    Corey,

I like your creativity! That’s a neat shot.
With a little crop, the wristwatch manufacturer would probably be interested!

Cory great shot!  This particular thread has done the same for me.  I wanted to incorporate multiple pieces of it this weekend.  My wife and I took our two year old and we’re trying to teach him how to properly hold a fish.  The idea was to get my kid in the background of a shot practicing.  Operator error in the end  (by me) was our downfall. The lens needed to be stopped down a few notches, unfortunately I left the A at 2.8 and Hudson is only partially visible practicing his holding behind mom’s demo.

My next goal was to do a blatant copy of some of the photos I liked above.

Thanks guys .. I appreciate the compliment and the feedback!

Some more shallow depth of field fun.
Hit our Brown Tailwaters with a group of friends for a day of fun and insanity on Friday. I brought my entire kit along, all 40+ pds of it

…all I want to do is spend 24 hrs on a river 🙂

    Seems like you already do!

I have an understanding wife Tim. and kids that are old enough now that we ( my wife and I have more free time)

Truth is 95% of my fishing or photogrpahy is done on Sat and Sun mornings. I just push myself hard to get my fixes and squeeze it all in.

Mon_Fri I’m up at 5am, in the office for 7am, home by 6pm, Kids, house or yardwork, bed.

Sat/Sun Im up at 5am, out the door before sunrise, do whichever for a few hours and home by 11am leaving the rest of the day for kids and family.

I think it’s called the rat race 😉

You can get some nice isolation at f3.5 or f4.0 but alot’s going to depend your focal length ( the long the better) and your distance to subject ( the closer the better)

This was shot with my 400mm at f5.6 and 1/25th

So while its not fast glass, in my favor for this type of effct I have a 400mm and I’m close to the subject. Both of those reduced my DoF dramatically (its likekly about 2 inches) the trade off though is reduced field of view.

So if your limited for now to like a 55mm at F3.5 to f.56 and want that kind of effect get as close to the subject as you can (MFD) *and* try to make sure the background (trees/shoreline etc) are farther away rather than right behind the subject.

The rich color and depth you continuously produce is what I’m striving for.  I can’t seem to even come close thus far, despite my best efforts.   The tack sharp and deep saturation of color seems to elude me;  –

    Thanks guys.
Aaron I’m still learning myself, I don’t consider myself accomplished and have alot to learn myself from the like of those you mentioned and others.

Time of day does play a large role, you won’t see me “show off” many images taken between 10am and 2pm unless it’s winter months where the sun lower on the horizon throughout the day. I’m still trying to learn that and many other things.

As for discussing, explaining how I shoot things, you get out what you give back and I’ve had lots of help myself from people, if I can help others who are starting to learn then I’m happy to do so. Zachs site is pretty unique in that it offers anglers who also want to take or want to learn photogrpahy seriously. Lots of sites that cater to one or the other but not both.

    Tim:

When using fill flash, set for “Rear Curtain Sync” so the shot absorbs ambient light before popping the target with white flash.
    Zach

Thanks Zach, – I got a new flash a few months back and missed the setting.
