The Itinerant AnglerHa! Someone’s gotta hold the camera… Here’s one for you, from Slough Creek (up in the damn rocks at the far end of the 1st Meadow – my hair was standing up taking these pics).

Here’s one of me that needed some work:

Not many pics of me on the whole trip, I’m afraid. Better take it up with Lauren. 🙂

MemberZach, what pack is that you are wearing that is a back pack, chest pack and water pack with drink tube?

The Itinerant AnglerIn the bottom photo it is a Fishpond Double Haul, without the chestpack. (I hate chestpacks as chestpacks, but I use the one from the Double haul as a shoulder bag and it works great for that, especially on the beach).
In the top photo it is a Granite Gear snowboarder’s pack. Lauren and I swapped out depending on who was going to be carrying and using the camera gear.
I purchased Camelbak bladders separately for both packs and added them; they didn’t come with the backpacks. I really recommend those – Yellowstone was Lauren’s first time to use them and I’m sure she’ll agree.
Oh and in case you’re wondering what I’m doing; I’m actually flopping my right hand around because it felt like it was going to cramp. That was a 20″ cutthroat that I was fighting upriver in heavy current, and I couldn’t move down to him due to a deep dropoff.

In the snow world we call that style – Weak sauce booter under 25′ hand-down, booter over 25′ hand-up.. if you bombing a 100′ cheese wedge, whatever you like : )

MemberI love Trout lake and the entire region still haunts me from a crazy bear encounter years ago when I lived there. Gorgeous country and can’t wait to get back there again next Summer!

MemberLooks like it was a fantastic trip! Lots of fish, good tacos, and stunning scenery! Is that someone standing out there with all those buffalo!?!

MemberEvery tourist visiting Yellowstone should be required to watch the people vs. animal encounter videos on the NPS website
http://www.nps.gov/yell/photosmultimedia/safetyvideos.htm
It would stop a lot of the stupidity and carelessness.

MemberGreat post John! I couln’t agree more. The 4th video with the mom posing with the kids in front of the bison is really unfortunate. It’s hard to believe there aren’t more “incidents” involving bison, elk, etc. and park visitors.

The Itinerant AnglerHere’s a couple.
Click through this first one to see full size. This is a stitched panorama of the first meadow of Slough Creek.
Those with Google Earth can download our track. Just drag-and-drop the file into Google Earth and make sure your slider at the top left is configured wide enough to show the track for August 2009. I’ve pinned the exact location of the panorama to the track.

The Itinerant AnglerIncidentally, when stitching panoramas, you get a lot less distortion using CS3’s auto-merge feature when you have a lot of images to work with. That and keeping the horizon level are critical (Lauren did an excellent job of that – better than I can do without a tripod).
