MemberI’m curious who out there on the IA forum also bird hunts. Zach, I know you do some bird hunting. Anyone else?
What kind of birds do you chase, and what kind of dogs do you own?
I’m tagging along with a local vizsla breeder/trainer this weekend for a quail hunt. I was going to just take photos, but he insisted that I hunt and he carry the camera. How could I argue with him?

MemberQuail hunted when we had enough birds to actually hunt.
Chased Ruffed Grouse in Virginia with my best bud.
Woodcock hunted for quite a few years (until my young thickets grew up)
I had a grandson of Elhew Snakefoot for 12 years, one brilliant dog, smarter than most people 😀
Did my Woodcock hunting with a Llewellyn Setter.
Now have a Boykin, our 3rd one, plan on having one until I go six foot under.

MemberOne of the many advantages of living in West Texas are the bird hunting opportunities that begin minutes from your front door.

I hunt for pheasant and grouse mostly. Those are the birds I enjoy eating the most. I hunt with the black lab in the picture. Mac does a great job and LOVES hunting birds!

Justin WittMemberI do quite a bit of bird hunting down here in Argentina during the winter months while fishing is closed. Â Ducks and geese make up the majority of our table fare throughout those months, but the real attraction for me are the California Quail and the Snipe. Â Two or even three hundred birds flushed in a day is actually common (the Quail covey up in chunks of fifty or more throughout most of the early season). So far I am hunting with a geriatric (and Alzheimers-ish) yellow lab who often forgets by the time she gets to shore with the first duck that two more hit the water right behind it, and a mutt I found way up int he Andes – La Negra. Â Negra is coming along this year though, and has in fact retrieved several quail from thick in the brush this year, only eating one of them, the first. Â She learned her lesson there! Â I have dreams of an English Pointer or German Shorthair for next year. Â Since I just built a house in the little Welsh town of Trevelin and have good neighbors, there are several area estancias I have permission to hunt – properties of up to twenty thousand hectares, which is far more than I can hunt in a day. Â I was away from hunting birds the first years I moved down here, and missed it terribly. Â I count myself blessed now to have these properties just five minutes drive from my front door, and quail picking their way through the front yard almost every morning. Â As the Eels once sang – “I like,… Birds.”

Mark SchaferMemberHere in NW Ohio we get some decent Dove shooting along with both field and river waterfowl hunting. I took my 14 year old to South Dakota for his first time last week..I think he’s hooked

The present and the future

Jakes first wild rooster

6 month old Zayne and 10 year old Storm gave us a father and son double
Bird numbers were down a bit this year and they were a bit harder to find, but we had plenty of shooting and a good time was had by all.Nov 15, 2012 at 11:58 pm #54000

MemberGreat stuff. Every time I see bird hunting photos or hear stories about a new place or bird to hunt, I add it to my mental bucket list. I’m going this weekend to hunt behind some vizslas. If I can arrange it in the spring, I might be choosing from one of their pups.
Mark, I grew up in Seneca County. I’ve been in Kentucky for about 5 1/2 years now. I never did much duck hunting though – mostly doves, deer, rabbits and squirrels.

MemberHere in East Tennessee, even between flyways, it’s all about ducks in the winter. I’ve been passionate about the sport since 1976. My labs Dakota and Madison travel with me where ever we decide to go. North Alabama, west Tennessee, and Southern Illinois are the usual destinations. It’s time…………

Jeff SmithMemberI like to hunt pheasant, grouse (Ruffies, Spruce, Sharpies and Huns) plus ducks. No dog so I gotta kick up and retrieve!
Great fun!Nov 17, 2012 at 1:14 am #54007Curtis E. Niedermier
MemberI didn’t get to hunt today, but I did get to watch a couple of excellent vizslas out on a run. They were just getting some exercise, but I was able to see two very different personalities. One dog likes to run to the moon and back. She’s about 2 years old and already pretty decorated in field trial competition. The other dog stayed much closer and was obviously interested in being within sight of us. Both had tremendous drive.
I was really impressed. Out in the field, the dogs had no quit. In the house, they were up in your lap, wanting a lot of love. Sounds like the perfect dogs to me.

MemberLots of Dove here in GA for me and an occasional kick-n-blast quail trip with the paw.
South GA dove hunts in the 90 degree heat are the best fun you can have with a shotgun in GA IMO.

MemberI have hunted many types of upland birds and waterfowl-
I love bird hunting-
Quail, Grouse, Pheasant, woodcock and all manner of ducks and geese-
I have a yellow lab named Bear–He is as easy going and gentle as any dog I have ever owned–He also has zero drive and desire to hunt-
His predecessor was the best dog I ever owned–Jake was a black lab and he retrieved his first duck at 10 weeks old—(teal) and he was off to the races after that-
Jake died early of cancer-he was only 8 and was in the prime of his life-
Bear and Jake came from the same kennel and share some lineage-
Some dogs have it–some dogs don’t–
Since moving to Florida, I have decided not to get a new water dog—I am not interested in seeing my dog become a gator snack while making a retrieve-
