MemberSo I was reading the post about “photo express” and you guys were kind of alluding to this topic and I may have missed an answer posted on a previous discussion but where can you post your pictures and still have them “protected”?

MemberUnfortunately, from what I know, there is no way to 100% protect your pictures when you post them anywhere on the internet. If I have anything that I think may be of value, either for local competitions, magazine submittals, etc. I don’t post them, it’s that simple. If I post it, I mark it copyrighted, reduce it in size to make it all but useless for anything but the web, but I assume that someone will download it. I even have friends and relatives copy photos, when all they have to do is ask, I would give them the a copy of the full file.

MemberAlright so educate me on the copyrighting, are just photoshoping in a signature on the bottom corner of your photos then?

MemberSo I misspoke, apparently it would be easy to download off Zack’s site.

MemberLee,
If you put it up on the web for anyone to view, then it’s downloadable.

John BennettMemberif you want to upload pics and make them available on the net the best thing you can do is make the files small…in the neiborhood of 800 x 550 and med quality. The result is an image thats a few hundred KB. While anyone can rip that and redisplay them, whatever its unlikely the file will of much use for anything other than web display.
Trying to print say an 8.5 by 11 would result in unsatifactory IQ if not abviously pixelated.
Using PS to watermark the image doesnt do a whole lot. Its linda like an alarm system on your house.
It will stop or deter the people looking for easy targets, it wont stop the determined, knowledgble ones.Apr 21, 2008 at 12:29 pm #63163Zach Matthews
The Itinerant AnglerMatt Boutet described why you can now download photos off this site without a barrier.

Mike McKeownMemberIt is really difficult to stop the dowloading of pics, there are ways around everything… even going as far as screen dumps…

MemberI’ve pointed this out before in other posts and will say it again. I use Photoshelter to archive and display my work. There is no way of downloading an image off of their site. The only thing that can be done (and it has been already) is to take screen shots of the thumbnails and manipulate them from there which results in crappy prints. I did have some of my images stolen this way by a college student who used them in a Powerpoint presentation. Thankfully, word got back to me and he was made to cease and desist.
I highly recommend Photoshelter.

MemberSorry I haven’t responded, haven’t had the time to scroll this far down on the page and see the posts.
I’ve been a PS member for almost 2 years. My total sales so far have been about $1000. That has more than paid for the 2 years of service. I recently got a sale for FHM Germany, something I would have never gotten without PS.
I really only use it for the on-line archiving capabilities. Two years ago, I lost over 1000 raw images from a trip to Colorado when my external hard drive failed a week after the trip. I never backed the stuff up on CD and lost everything.May 13, 2008 at 12:58 pm #63175kendal larson

MemberKendal,
PS is hooked up with a print company, can’t remember off the top of my head who it is, but what’s cool is that if someone orders a print from your PS gallery, the print company handles the whole deal and you collect the $$$. I did a pricing structure that ensured I’d make a decent profit from the print sale and let them handle all the printing and shipping needs.
