The Itinerant AnglerOk, guys, the LinkedIn thread below made me curious.
No one has to answer this, but I think it might be fun and we might see some people doing similar things.
So here’s the question: What do you do for a living?
Most of you already know I’m a lawyer as well as a writer.

MemberI am a machinist for Roush Yates Engines in Mooresville, NC.
Basically, we build all of the engines for the Ford cars running in the Sprint Cup Series. These include the #7 Matt Kenseth, #6 David Ragan, #16 Greg Biffle, #26 Jamie McMurray, #28 Travis Kvapil, #38 David Gilliland, and #99 Carl Edwards.
I run lathes and mills as well as hone the blocks after they get raced so we can build them again. I also hone rods and pistons when we get them in new to match our specifications.

InactiveGood topic…I am curious though Zach why you thought it would be amuzing??
I work for one of 37 National Heritage Areas. Ours is located in Pennsylvania. Heritage Areas are designated by congress as areas where a unique cultural, historical and geographical landscape come together to tell part of the American story. We get most of our funding through the National Park Service and we are a way for the NPS to further their mission without having to manage large parks and land.
We use projects like recreation, historic preservation and resource conservation for economic development and revitalization.
I do project management and also manage two grant programs. One of the grant programs focus’ on water quality project in our watershed. Stormwater management, Ag BMP’s and AMD remediation.
Another one of our focus’ is building rail trails as a means of downtown revitalization.
Pretty fun stuff…but you aint going to get rich doing it.

MemberI’m the master plan estimator for a large, Texas home builder. I work at our main office, where all of the support staff is located. We have offices in Austin, San Antonio, and Houston and build in all three cities.
In short, I review all of the plans (and we have a lot) that come out of our CAD department to be new master plans for all of our communities. We do most of our estimating by computer programs, but some estimates still have to be done by hand. I have to review the plans to make sure they are correct and have all necessary information, including the embedded computer information. Otherwise, garbage in=garbage out. So, I mark up and review a plan like your high school English teacher marked up your term paper.
Basically, it is a lot of data entry and minute details. I also do a little programing on one of our programs that does some of the estimating. Once all of this is done, I can then help my boss, the VP, do sales price analysis and run reports, etc.
I have a beautiful and wise wife of 2.5 years, who I enjoy sharing life with every day.
Hobbies: Photography, fly fishing & tying, shooting, and snowboarding.

MemberThis is such an interesting thread! It’s cool to get a glimpse of what you all are doing. There are some really great occupations represented here!
I am working on my PhD in literature at Emory University. My focus is on 17th and 18th century British texts. I spend most of my time reading and analyzing poetry (think Donne, Marvell, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Swift). As part of the PhD program at Emory, I also teach writing to first year students. It’s great fun and so gratifying to introduce students to college and have a hand in their rapid progress.
I spend my spare time on cooking and outdoor pursuits (hiking, fishing, photography).

MemberWell, I work Toyota Boshoku America in Novi, Mi. I fly below the radar most days, working with suppliers to resolve their manufacturing issues so I guess that makes me a SAQ. My part time job in the snowy months would be a Ski Instructor, I’m on the snow over 40 hours a week in addition to my windowless, soulless office job.
And when I’m not working, I’m doing training rides; I race 12 and 24 hour endurance Mtb races (solo) in the summer and race elite level cyclocross in the fall and early winter. When I’m not on the bike I’m on the water. Me, busy, never.

Hobbies other than fly fishing/tying include cooking, photography, audio-visual presentations, SCUBA diving, and hiking with my wife.

MemberI guess I have three jobs. I call myself a drift boat guide, but about 4 months out of the year I have to make a living, which I do as a bodyguard for a rock and roll band. ;D I also dabble on the farm at home. (cattle).
I even get to fish once in awhile. 😉Sep 4, 2008 at 2:28 am #29533Aaron Christensen
