Don’t feel bad, Tim. I ride a desk and live vicariously myself. But surely there are some places locally for you to throw around a line.

I typically do one big trip each summer. This time Alaska. Start saving now for next year’s trip. I pride myself in finding the cheapest way to do it. I’ve done ten days in Yellowstone for $900. How? Take the backpack and live in the backcountry. No hotel and restaurant bills and the rental car stays parked at the trailhead. Car rental can be split between 2 to 4 adults. Airfare is the big ticket item but can usually be had fairly cheap if you shop around and purchase in March or April.
Alaska is a little different…..much more expensive.

I’m guessing folks on this site are at all different stages in life, earning power and fishable time.I know it sounds cliché, but for me, it’s a decision about how I live my life.
Tim, I empathize. I was lamenting this on another thread. If it makes you feel any better:
1. My dog died recently
2. My truck is in the shop
3. My income is down 40% for this year from lost trips due to the flooding and weather.
4. It’s too hot to work on my boats, paint the house, or do yard work (OK, this may be a blessing on the last two outdoor activities).
5. It’s been 2004 since I’ve done a road trip
6. I feel like bitching and moaningLet’s start a Trout Bummer group.
I’m stuck at my work desk, and live in Central Texas (41 days to date over 100 degrees this summer…..yesterday was 105!).

I’m one of the “Yellowstones”.Let me tell you a little about me that may help you feel better.
I spend 50-60 hours every week and some weeks more, sitting behind a desk.

Perhaps there is a little luck mixed in. For myself its locations … Yellowstone, Wyoming, and Dillon (MT) are not to far away and I’m lucky enough to have in-laws with a cabin in a very central location. A mother in Fl. and an aunt in AK don’t hurt either.
I have to say I’m damn near out of vacation now. So, its back to the desk and the computer. I doubt I’ll be doing anything more than weekenders for a while. I am pretty sure this will make my wife and boy very happy.

And what’s wrong with weekends? I can’t complain too much, but that’s what I get: weekend fishing. I’ve fished locally every weekend for the last 9 weeks except this past weekend. I feel a bit left out not being able to do trips like some of those here, but hey, at least I got to replace my transmission to the tune of $3500 after tax and car rental. 🙁

Nothing at all…except I am not even getting them!
This is my point…ALL I HAVE is 2 or 3 “weekenders”. The highlight of my entire fishing year is what most people consider table scraps.
Dont get me wrong…I LOVE the stage my family is in…scraped up knees, teaching them how to ride a bike, finding monarch caterpillars on the undersides of milkweed leaves. …
Sorry, I didn’t mean for it to sound like I don’t enjoy the weekend fishing. Quite the opposite … I think I’d be happy sticking my local river for a long long time. This year has been an exception for me and my new job has allowed me a bit more ‘extra’ time. My boy is now to the age where I think i’ll start to have a bit less river time .. I’m looking forward to it.
Havent had a rod in my hand for 7 weeks…maybe its one of those weird.

OUCH! Now that really sucks. I can only imagine the joys of having a family and kids. And missing fishing for them. I am sure that’s an easy decision, if not always a happy one.
I have friends with kids. Friends who make the same types of decisions to skip on things they need in favor of things their family needs. I’ve been fortunate to see their happiness at their kids joys and accomplishments.
I am single with no kids so I don’t have that to keep me off the water. I do know what it’s like to not be able to fish. In January I ruined my back. I was physically unable to fish for about five weeks. It drove me nuts. I still hardly ever go a day without pain, but that is not a complaint. Just the way things are. Others truely have worse problems than I. After all, I am fishing, and by most peoples standards, fishing a lot.
I hope that all the time you give to your family is revisited with some great days on the water. More so that you get to share some of them with you boy in the future.
In the meantime, keep reading. Posts like the ones which inspired this thread kept me jonesing for some water time. They still do. 🙂
