I hate them! Up here everybody and his brother is fanatical about chironomid fishing and believe you have to use an indicator. I go out of my way to avoid them. It’s a personal thing, reminds me too much of when I was a kid fishing worms under a float.

I agree with Zach. Wrist casting does work, but it limits your options. When I teach casting I tell my students to think of backing up a trailor with short tongue. When you wrist cast there is little room of error just like backing a trailor with a short tonge. I remember 35 years ago when the comon phrase was it’s all in the wrist. I have even seen old film footage where the instructors was teaching viewers to use their wrist. This old school stuff made casting harder to learn. You also have to remember that many of those old rod flexed like a buggy whip and didn’t require the force that our modern rods require.

Neat trick; looks like an improved clinch knot without the twisting. No twists less friction to weaken the leader when tightening the knot. I like it.

I’m not the most computer literate but I do have a decent Dit Cam, so I’ll give it try over the next day or so.

I am only listing my fly rods since, since I have fished with exclusively will flies for the last twenty years. You may find my list long so please bare in mind that both my wife and two daughters fly fish along with me, and that I also use a selection of rods as props when I teach fly fishing classes. It also needs to be metioned that I did not aquire my collection in a few years or with a large outlay of cash, having been taught the skills of rod making when I was 11 years of age most of my equipment has been aquire through hores trading and repair.

3: production 8FT cane rods. These are pre 60’s, so they have the letter code instead of numers for the line weight. I estimate them to 3/4 weights. Two of them work well with a double tappered line for delicate pressentations. My wife and I use these two for pan fish and small trout, as well as props in fly fishing classes. they other is so whippy it is of no use for anything but a wall mount. “Rating 5”

1: 9FT Steel rod. Traded a cane rod for this one. I have never used this one, just wanted it for my collection. This rod is one piece and I had to break it to get it into the car. Put a splint in blank and hung it on the wall, so it does what I wanted.

1: 8.5 FT three piece solid fiberglass switch rod. This one is one of the first production glass rod IE the solid glass blank. This one is heavy and why it was made as a switch, so it can be casted with one or both hands. Another one of my collectors that I use as a prop. No markings at all on this one so I estimate it to be a 12 or 13. I use this one for those rare times when I target large 30LB + springs (kings). Over all not a pleasure to work with. “Rating 2”

    1: Early 60’s,

    N,

It was the largest I caught on a fly. Caught it on the Anvik River in Alaska. Awesome trip. 6 fathers and sons. Not sure who had the most fun. We also caught Char, Greyling and a couple nice Kings.
And the King Crab legs were as big as my arm 😛

I thought so, Chum Salmon are my favorite next to large wild Rainbows. The Stave river is 10 minets from my door and the Chum run there from Oct through Nov. Along with Coho & Spring (you call them King). I have been very fortunate to have been part of the evolution Salmon fly fishing here in BC. and developed a bunch of effective fly patterns for targeting them.

Anyway back to Chum; I save a week of holidays each year just to target those beasts. Of all the species I have caught, pound for pound nothing fights like a Chum.

Like the others have said it’s a vinyl material. Tried it a few years back for tying wingcasings on stonefly nymphs. The product is okay but not all it’s cracked up to be.

Short rods are not any harder to cast. To prove it to yourself & son, line your rod. Then take take the tip section off and cast with it. One of my freinds from our local Bass club, who is avid fly guy, built an awsome three footer that he uses for panfish.

Too bad about the tackle clerk feeding your son misinformation. One of the things I emphasize when teaching novices about tackle is to do your home work and make your own decision. Your equipment, is “your equipment nobody elses”. The right equipment for you will last you for years. Get the wrong equipment and will be wanting something else within six months.
