It is my main vise.   The only vise I would trade it for would be an HMH Standard, which is basically the same vise with a couple added bells and whistles.

I started on a Traveller and it was fine until I tried other vises.  Since then I have tied on a Regal and Dynaking Barracuda (both loaners) before I decided on the HMH after tieing on one and loving it.

What I like about the HMH vises is that they are all metal, sturdy and well made.  The jaws easily swap out to accomodate smaller midge hooks or larger saltwater hooks with no slipping, something that universal jaws cant do.  While not a true rotary, the jaws still rotate 360 degrees.  And, my absolute favorite feature, the angle of the jaws can be easily moved up or down.  This is huge and very helpful in tying many fly patterns.  *Edit* It can also take a tube fly converter making an inline, rotary tube vise.

    Your mileage may vary.

To be honest, I have really never tried anything else. I have to say this conversation has made me a little bit curious, but maybe I should just leave well enough alone before it winds up costing me $400.

Ive tied on some of these expensive vises and, while they are nice, my favorite is still my $170 HMH Spartan.

Personal preference though and like Scott said, if it aint broke dont fix it.

firstly, spike that renzetti in the trash and get a real vise.

secondly, if you are dead set on keeping that junk then hmh makes a tube fly tool that works with any vise that can take 2/0 hooks:

The Natural Resource Department in the state in which I live does not publish information about the majority of wild trout streams.  Nor do they assign catch and release regulations to these streams because the moment CnR are established on a wild trout stream is the moment the pressue increases, possibly to levels bad for the fishery.

People fish those streams that are mentioned in the regs, or those streams that are mentioned in a mag.

Do what you want to get your name in print, I cant stop you, but try to think before you write an article, ‘Does this article make me a whore?’  If the answer is yes or even requires a second thought (and heaven forbid requires a justification), then, my good man, your are a prostitute.

    Mike –

I like that.  Nothing wrong with that at all.  Kent Edmonds showed me the neatest trick the other day.  He takes his rubber legs, usually white, and he twists them up.  Then he runs a marker straight down one side.  When he lets go, the rubber untwists and you have a perfect “candy cane” style striping pattern.  You can then twist it the other way and run a different color to get like a helix.  The segmenting looks amazing and there’s no expensive “Centipede legs” to buy.

    That does sound nice.
