MemberWhile I’ve found the above opinions both interesting and informative, I feel somewhat embarrassd that after 25 years of flyfishing I’ve never casted a bamboo flyrod.

Having no association with the flyfishing industry in any way, I’m continually amazed at how small the business end is.

MemberI think it’s likely that the fixed MSRP model will officially disappear in the flyfishing industry in the near future.

MemberThe manager of a very successful long running flyshop relayed to me that a flyshop needs 3 things to be profitable:

MemberEssentially the $145 serves the same purpose as a deductible on an insurance policy.

MemberThat said, the companies have actually tracked these things and they tell me they’ve discovered some interesting facts about warranty use. Most of us still do not use the warranty on a new rod. However, the likelihood is that once a person uses a warranty once, they will often do so again and again. Basically, a small number of anglers are breaking a large number of rods sold and their clumsiness is resulting in higher costs across the board. Careful anglers are paying for careless anglers’ repairs via inflated prices.
Thanks for this info as I suspected most warranty repairs resulted from a select few repeating offenders.

Memberthey maybe butt ugly but the old glx didn’t win any beauty contest but how great were they,
The original GLX was a special rod for its time . . . . . still fishes great today.
Who designed the original GLX’s?

MemberMy fishing in the Vineyard has always been in late September and early October, so I’m not sure how useful my info. will be for your mid August trip.
The Edgartown Lighthouse is one of the 2 most popular and productive spots on the island to catch a false albacore or bonito on a fly (Menemsha/Lobsterville beach being the other).

MemberJT, I second the Urban Angler recommendation. Take the 4 or the 5 to Union Square and from there you can walk about 5 minutes to the shop. There are other subway lines as well that will drop you off close by.
Also keep in mind that fishing for striped bass in the summer will most likely happen in the middle of the night.
