    Zach,
Having fished both extensively in the last 10 years I’m going with the Bighorn. It offers several positives that the Madison does not. First and foremost it gives my son who is new to fly fishing an easier learning curve. The fish density is much greater on the Bighorn, and it’s loaded with several fish in the 14-18 inch range. On my list to hit is the White river in your backyard which is without a doubt a great opportunity to grab something over 24 inches. The other big selling point on the Bighorn is cost, it’s cheaper trip overall since we do our own guiding. You do not get the scenery like at the Madison but it’s still a great Montana skyline. Thanks for your input Zach, looking forward to this seasons podcasts!

Nice article Zach. My buddy has some ‘whipers’ in his small farm pond and when you are throwing a 5wt for the other species and hit one of the whipers, it’s hold on and hope the tippet holds. 25 inch are not uncommon in his 1/2 acre pond. They are a blast to fish for and everything you can handle.

Yeah I’m looking to do some streamer fishing for big Browns that time of year. I don’t know what you think is cold? I fish for steelhead in 5 degree weather in 34 degree water. If you are talking about making our own boats, no we would leave that to the guide.

    Mike,
Saw your name on the flyfishyellowstone blogspot. Question for you is there a fly on there the long tail bugger. Any idea on the materials used for this fly?

    Mike,
I only had issues with them on the upper madison, added the carbide inserts and they were fine. The soles of these boots need replaced, the uppers are fine. I figured I could always replace the soles, get some alum bites screws in for the upper madison and be good with it. I was really interested in the patagonia Crampons or the yaktrax stream trekkers which are 1/10 the cost of the patagonia crampons.

    Mike,
Since I’ll be fishing the area in October, I was looking to tie up some of those pine squirrel buggers. Do you still use the traditional marabou tail? Also what colors do you suggest, black, olive, natural…?
As always thanks for the info you provide.

    Zach,
I have or say had a pair of costa which have disappeared to points unknown. My sunglasses line up Is as follows, suncloud for every day wear and driving, native as a back up pair for fishing and now I ordered a pair of costa fan tails in the 580P. Last pair of costa were the 580G and the weight did bother me to an extent. Hopefully I’ll find my 580G’s and will be set for years to come.

Looking at a new pair of costa or smiths. Can’t really decide which ones to go with. I get a discount on both so they come out just about the same price overall. Any ideas out there guys? I will be going with plastic lens and most likely in a copper to amber shade.

Another vote for simms. I have been wearing the same guide model for almost 10 years now. In the first year I fell onto a cut cottonwood stump thanks to a beaver on the Madison. It was like a punji stick going I to my thigh. I sent the waders back to simms and they provided a pair of G3’s as loaners in my size while mine were repaired. Man I’d don’t want to give up my loaners. Since then I have repaired them with aqua seal from time to time but they are still going strong. I’m starting to look at replacements and it will only be simms. I have friends who have bought cheaper waders and they are on their second or third pair now compared to me. Just can’t beat quality.
