I have some “hang-ups” about pay-to-fish streams and/or private “clubs”. I do fish a stretch of private water here in Virginia, Escatawba Farms, I know the owner and he runs a nice operation, although $100 a rod aint cheap! It seems to be quite the “fad” here in Virginia – if you’re rich you buy some property with a steam on it, run some piano wire or cow fencing at either end, over stock it with HUGE Rainbow and charge people to fish it. I spend a lot of time on the Jackson, catch nice fish and do it all for free!

Thanks for not getting defensive, fffffg. Whenever possible I leave my fish in the water while removing the hook. Haven’t posed for a picture in a long time … but with a fish like that, I’d probably pick it up too … maybe even hold it by my face! But I’d try to keep my thumb out of the gill plate. With practice I’ve gotten better at fish handling, but I still fumble sometimes after lo these many years.
Got to say I like your attitude. Hope you hook many more.

A photo is worth a thousand lies … but a thumb in the gill (or what certainly looks like one) is worth avoiding. Fish handling skills too often go unappreciated. That said, gorgeous fish.

Seth. That’s a beautiful rainbow and a quality fish. Is that the South Platte above Eleven Point? That’s one of my favorite pieces of water in CO. I’ve only ever fished it in September during the Tricos. I’ve hooked some large trout there, but never gotten one in cause they run like hell and I can’t ever keep up around the bends.
Yeah, piss yellow and dung brown just don’t do anything for me either. B&W all the way.

Nice photo. I’ve seen something like this before with some daffodils or apple blossoms in color and everything else black and white. A real eye popper. Might be worth another trip this week Matt if anything is in bloom by the outhouse. I drove a backroad yesterday that had the most dogwoods I have ever seen in one place and the lighting was spectacular. Unfoturnately I was with a customer and couldn’t stop for photos. Now just a memory on the backroads of my mind
Seth. My experience with the hatches on the White River is it depends on the hatch and its intensity and stage. The sulphurs are a slow to hatch mayfly. Typically, the fish eat the nymphs just as they are coming into the surface film. All of the stomach samples I have taken during the prime part of the hatch each day show they nymphs are spliting cases and actually emerging in the fish’s stomach having been taken well before they actually emerge.
However, as the hatch comes to a close, there are more duns available riding the surface, and the fish begin to feed on them more. The hatch can actually cycle on and off several times a day especially on overcast, cool days, so the duns are more important then since the shorter cycles may mean the fish see more opportunities to eat the duns when that happens.
I suppose too, just as is the case with humans, individual fish tastes vary, and there are those who are more fond of duns and cripples.
On caddis however, the fish follow the caddis in well defined stages. Early in the morning the caddis pupa begin to drift and you will see the fish flashing on the bottom and feeding heavily. As the morning progresses, they follow the pupa into the water column higher. By noon, they are taking emergers and beginning to take a few adults. Once that happens start getting the dries ready, because they will be eating the adults within the hour or so.
This is characteristic of the truly large hatches, but it becomes more difficult to assess what will work best when with smaller, more sporadic hatches. Also, a hatch can cycle on and off quickly or show a more prolonged development depending on conditions that day.

I found some synthetics I thought would make a good pattern, but after experimenting with them found it’s not what I want. Still looking for a good combination of materials with the color I want.
You might try Kelly Galloup’s T&A Rainbow pattern.

Well, since your catering to a bunch of rich people who don’t mind paying a premium to fish, or shop I guess, (seeing how this is a “members only” fly shop), I would carry Action Optics. I wear the Guide’s Choice model, (got’em at an employee discount), great lense choices in glass and plastic. They aint cheap but…

Have had two pair in 12 years of use. Polycarb still usable as backup. I still prefer the pilot frames. Glass with 2x diopters are my main glasses. Have sent back for repair of frames once (my fault, but no charge) and had to order replacement nose guards a couple of times (no charge). Service is great, easy to deal with via email. Quality of product superb.
