I know its off topic and I am not a great one for non-fishing related topics on a fishing message board, but we’re all friends here…

I have to say that the atmosphere here is off the charts. Everyone is in a soccer jersey and blowing a vuvuzella, all the cars have flags on them, either on the roof or the mirrors. People are singing in the streets, shouting and screaming…

and we haven’t even had the first game yet…

    I’ll try get some photos…

I bet it’s a sight to behold.  I’m watching the opening ceremonies right now.  If only they had games that started at times other than between 1am and 6am NZ time….

Sorry Tim, normally I am bitching at the wrong times, but right now, it’s 4pm and 8pm, just have to time myself on the frostie consumption.

    Getting all goosebumpy…

I coached youth league soccer and know quite a bit about the game, but, Americans just don’t get excited about soccer once the kids reach football age.  It’s a great game.  I would do away with goal tenders though, so you would have lots of scoring like basketball.  Can you imagine how exciting it would be to see a soccer score of 85 to 84.

That is the most typical American response to soccer.

Soccer is a game of strategy with plays building from the defense, just like in hockey (another sport most Americans dont get).

Couldn’t agree more, but hockey is better then soccer.

One of the best sporting events…looking forward to the next few weeks. We American’s tend to be quite a bit ethnocentric regarding this topic.

I’ll be happy regardless of the outcome, but as the songs goes, “Three lions on my shirt.” 😉  We’ll see who figures that one out!

    Barmy Army…

Last night was something to behold. Oh my sack, the noise, the spirit, the everything… and I wasn’t even at the game.

More to come today, USA are playing England… should be fun.

    England – USA… kicking off in 10 minutes…

if you guys see those horns the fans are blowing, its called a vuvuzella. “vu-vu-ze-la”, they are as loud as you can imagine, the sound of soccer in SA. They are originaly the horns off the top of diesel locomotives…

The horns are cool but personally there is nothing like listening to the Brit’s when they are singing.

I watched the USA v England game also and it was enjoyable, particularly since the USA got out alive.

Footy has taken precidence over fishing. Watched the germany v. socceroos game yesterday when I should have been out on the canoe.

Saturday was a long day with 9+ hours at the pub. Took a break between games and picked up the Buff gloves at Orvis up the street.

Next week’s schedule will game – game – work – game – fish
