You should have been here yesterday!  How many times have I heard that phrase?  Seems like every fishing trip I go on that’s the explanation I get after a day on the water.  Not this time!  Last week a friend and I fished the White River below Bull Shoals Dam (Mountain Home, AR) with my favorite guide, Marc Poulos.  The stars aligned and, for the first time in two years, an extended period of minimal generation resulted in water levels low enough to enjoy a relaxing day on the water.  I love fishing from a drift boat versus the constant roar of those motor driven jon boats.

The water was just right for a drift boat, overcast skies triggered bugs moving to the surface, and there was a little wind which created ripples to hide my less than delicate casting stroke.  In a word, the fishing was ridiculous.  We weren’t just fishing, we were catching.  We  were mostly nymphing but did throw a few dries and were fairly successful stripping streamers with sinking lines.  While we did very well the first day and landed our biggest browns on streamers, the second day was a treat when the fish began gorging on the prolific midge hatch.  The fishing was so good on the second day that my buddy caught 25 while the guide was fixing lunch!   The midge hatch was prolific.  This is why we go to the White River.

As if the good fishing wasn’t enough, we had beef kabobs for lunch the first day and grilled quail the second day. Our guide explained that he was preparing for a personal float trip later on the Buffalo River later in the spring and wanted to try out his new charcoal grill.   Life is good! The pictures aren’t great but I do have the obligatory food shot!

I am really glad to hear the water levels are returning to normal over there.

I’ll find out where Marc got that grill.  I think he said it’s new on the market.   I’m going to insist that he use it on our subsequent trips.

That’s Marc’s Boulder Boatworks.  Talk about comfortable.

Marc is a really good instructor and introduced me to his Scott S4s 6wt. with 250 grain sink tip.  Nice set up and very successful in that low flow environment.

Unfortunately the past weekend’s snow and rain raised the lake 3ft and now they’re running 7 units.  That’s tailwater fishing for you!
