How does one decide that it is time to give up on a floating fly line?

    Don’t.
When there are lots of cracks in the coating it will have problems staying floating.
Just don’t use it to fish but it’s still excellent for casting/testing rods.

Daniel. I can tell you how I decide.

When embedded dirt affects its performance. Sooner than you think. On mastery series lines, I can usually tell visually and by the sound it makes going though the guides. My heaviest used lines, I replace every 6 months. Depends on the water you fish, the type of line it is, how its cared for, quality of the line, etc., etc.

Lines are consumables. Treat ’em as such.

I am sure you will get other comments.

Although I don’t trash old lines, I do sell them on Ebay.

If they’re cracked, don’t float well, have coils that can’t be straightened or just plain slow down on the shoot no matter what treatment I use on them they’re goners.
It’s funny though, I haven’t had many ‘goners’ in years! That speaks highly either of the manufacturing processes or of the sterling treatment I give them!
