My tastes have gone really eclectic in the last two years. I used to listen to nothing but classic rock, but then, working construction, I realized the playlist is identical on every station because no new classic rock is recorded. 🙂
Now I listen to everything from Norah Jones to Old Crow Medicine Show to Allison Krauss. Knoxville has a great radio station for new and old bluegrass, WDVX. Check them out at http://www.wdvx.com/ (They have a free live feed).
I also am a compulsive NPR listener so I end up catching a lot of classical music waiting for the news. The local DJ is, weirdly, this huge Rimsky-Korsakov fan. The other day they ran a story on a Touareg music group called ‘Tinariwen’. The Tuoareg are a nomadic group in Mali, Africa, who live in the Sahara. This music is really freaking gritty – like New Orleans blues crossed with African rhythms and then crossed back with Elvis Presley’s guitar (and just his guitar). Check them out here:

I recommend listening to the “Eh Massina Sintadoben” track sample.
I still love my Creedence Clearwater Revival, but after a long day on the river I will sometimes veg out to Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald while I drink a beer or grill something.
