I was wondering, what is everyone’s favorite fly that they reach into their fly box and tie on either the most often or first to their tippet when they hit the stream?

It depends from river to river, but is usually one of the following: a zebra midge (18-22), a blood or disco midge (18-28), or a scud (14-18).

I enjoy tying flies about as much as fishing and have tried dozens of different recipies, but my nymph box is filled with less than a dozen patterns. Same can be said for my dry fly and streamer boxes. I experiment a lot more with midges–they are my favorite to fish.

Clouser minnows are my favorite fly in the whole wide world – especially a black/gray foxee dace in a #6.

Prince of Tides 1/0.  But then again, we don’t have many trout streams down here.

    In Arkansas:

#16 Trout Crack or Humpback Scud

    In Tennessee:

#20 Zebra Midge (Black and Silver) or #14 BH Pheasant Tail/Copper John

    Elsewhere:

Probably a #2 Zuddler in Olive

    Good question.

In my book my no 1 fly is a GRHE, gold rib hares ear.

That fly has caught me fish world wide,

For trout…hands down the gold ribbed hairs ear

    For Atlantic salmon…the foxford shrimp

For Stripers…a blue and white lefty’s deceiver

If I were restricted to one fly for each species it would be these

For N.C. Trout…Point Fly…Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail or variation of the RS-2…with a thread or crystal flash midge dropped off the back…

This combination works well on any tailwater or midge heavy fishery…
