I’m going to apologize first that this isn’t the best purist report, but if you find yourself down in PR for business or a fun trip, there is some fun fishing to be had that I would like to share with you guys.

Made it down to Puerto Rico for a trip with some college buddies last weekend. We chose the spot for a combo of adventure, beach and not needing passports for everyone. Pretty fun place to party, semi expensive, but good food and scenery, and even better for fishing! We stayed in Rincon in the middle west coast, which was a blast. That town hosted the 1968 world surfing championships.

Went out with an awesome guide off the south west coast.

My guide fee splitting partner wasn’t quite up to fly casting all day, but the guide had a good plan for that… live lining off the back, fly fishing off the front. Fished just offshore, on the beach, under marinas, lagoons and wayyyyy back in the mangroves.

Ended up with a handful of tarpon to the boat on fly (missed several), missed a few beasts on live bait. This was my third best one on fly, lost the other two right at the boat:

Caught a few nice ladyfish on both fly and live, man they fight hard!

Also got us a nice snook:

Weather was a BIG issue on the trip which limited the photos.

But, to cap it off, had an amazing local lobster deal I found by pure luck. Had these puppies all weekend:

The scenery was the best part:

I’ve fished PR several times over the last few years but haven’t used a guide so my access has been limited. With a small boat (and a little español ) there are a lot of areas around the island to fish for tarpon and bones. More tarpon than bones but the bones are there. Mike was fishing out of the Cabo Rojo area but there’s Tarpon fishing in and around San Juan too. Most every stream that flows to the coast is lined by mangroves. I’m hoping to get back soon, get my hands on a boat and do a little exploring.
