MemberI’m in the market for a waterproof boat bag. It appears from my research so far that the top 2 choices are either the Patagonia Great Divider or the Simms Dry Creek (although it looks like Sage has a new entry in this sector, but it is new and I’m not sure it is even available yet). What are your experiences/thoughts on these bags and to which bag would you give the nod? Are there any other options out there I should consider? FYI, I am looking for a bag to go in a Native Ultimate and on the back of a Hobie Float Cat 75.

MemberTake a look at these, as they’re made for the ultimate:

They look very well made. Watertrail is owned by the same company as Native and Heritage – Legacy Products.

MemberI have had the largest Simms for two years now. I still love it.

T. WilesMemberI have the same Simms bag, but the medium size, and can’t stand it.
Sure it’s waterproof, but the sides are rigid, and the zippers WILL fail. I was told this after I bought the bag, and sure enough…one hard season of use, and the Zipper’s off track and won’t reseal.
I use some tough SeaLine roll top bags, and they are bullet proof. They’ve got a widemouth version roll top bag with plenty of space, and it’s under $80. It’s tough, easy access, and much less expensive than some other options.

MemberI have the simms medium size bag as well as the patagonia bag (old green one that used to be $185) and i think that its a toss up. They both have zipper problems but in different ways.
The patagonia bag can be B**** to get open at times, even with the provided zipper lube. Its interior is laid out a little better and fits cliff bugger beast JR’s as well as plano 3600 style boxes well. the interior organizer flap is also great for personal items and frequently used items.
I had a similar zipper blowout with my simms bag in the denver airport, but to their defense, my bag was extremely overloaded and it was easily fixed due to having two zippers(patagonia only has one but it is much larger).
I love both bags and wouldn’t get rid of either, however I paid $50 for the Simms from Cabelas on sale, & the Patagonia is currently upwards of $200. That would be a major consideration if I were in your shoes.
I wish that in hindsight i had probably bought the large Simms guide bag that others mentioned, but it may be to wide to fit in the ultimate.

MemberIf splashproof is waterproof enough, the Mangrove neoprene bag is really pretty nice.

MemberThis may help make your decision easier, if you haven’t purchased already. Irregular but still covered under standard warranty

Phil BrnaMemberI have been using a big LL Bean bag with a rain fly that goes over the top. Great bag if you use the rain fly.

MemberI have had the Patagonia for 2 seasons now and it’s ok and only leaks if you submerge it. I know ths because my drifter got a lot of water in it one time and the bag turned over and filled with water.
I must admit the zipper can be tough at times, but I other than that the bags is pretty good.Nov 25, 2009 at 9:43 pm #40299
Michael PhillippeMemberI’ve used the Patagonia Great Divider for three years (although not heavily) and it is great. The downside is the difficulty with the zipper which means you won’t zip the bag closed, which means it ain’t waterproof if you swamp your watercraft. And trust me, it can happen. I’ve been in two drowned Clackacraft’s in the past 5 years.
