I thought I’d brave the potential high-water and rain in Yellowstone on Sunday.  The Firehole was as high as I’ve ever seen it.  The weather stayed nice until about 9:30AM, then the rains came in buckets for the rest of the day.  Below Biscuit Basin, the Firehole, although fishable, is way out of its banks and dangerous to wade.  At Biscuit Basin, the river is running clear and the fish are biting if you can get to them.

This photo shows the eastern channel of the Firehole out of its banks and flowing into the meadows.  The second photo shows this same stretch of river last Fall.  What you can’t see in the first photo is that the water was at least 6 inches higher the previous day as evidenced from all the debris washed into and stranded in the meadow.

This is a photo of the west channel which is only reachable by crossing the sandbar at the confluence of east and west channels.  Normally it is not more than knee deep at the sandbar.  Sunday, the water almost reached the top of my waders.  The second photo is this same channel last Fall.

What’s really amazing however is the amount of snow that remains at elevation in the park.  The drive over Craig Pass revealed drifts of 10-12 feet along the roadway and several feet of snow still on the forest bottom.  We will be sending a lot of water south this summer.
