Can anyone recommend an alternative to the Partridge Waddington Shank?

Take a salmon hook, straighten it, and then cut the point off. You can also use large streamer hooks, and just cut off the bend.

Just curious why not use the waddingtons?

Like Mike said, any of your favorite streamer hooks in your desired size should work as an alternative by simply cutting off the bend.

Seems like you could use a tube fly.  The tube would serve the same purpose and the line would be connected directly to the hook.

I have heard of people using cotter pins, but I really don’t see how that would work effectively.

My motivation is saving time and money – the Waddingtons at my local shop are 10 bucks for around 10 shanks.

I wonder how the cotter pins would work?

Holy Crap!!! No wonder, I would be straight up pissed off. I get mine from a shop out west. Here is a link to their site:

$8.95 for 24 shanks. I’m all for supporting local shops, but man.

Cotter pins are no Good. the edges are too sharp and can cut your tippet. I have heard of people bending the loop of them up like on a salmon/steelhead hook and then using a Turl knot but I have not tried it that way.
