    Hi all,

I’ve been working on a project to visit and photograph many of the places that John Voelker wrote about in his books Trout Madness, Trout Magic, and Anatomy of a Fisherman. He wrote those books roughly 50 years ago, but many of the rivers and ponds in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are just as wild today as the were then. I put together a video slideshow with some of the highlights from this past year with David Thompson’s excellent song Upstream (from the Fishing Music album with Ben Winship) as the soundtrack (w/permission). I hope you enjoy . . .

    Cheers,
    Tim

Thanks for the nice words guys. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.

Gary: As Voelker once wrote about gates,

“The best trout fishing is always on the far side of the moon, of course, and getting there and back naturally consumes a good part of the fisherman’s time, patience, and ingenuity — not to mention his capital assets. Normal hazards and obstacles encountered along the way include . . . owlish souls who maintain locked gates and steel cables and put up quaint welcome signs inviting all fishermen to keep the hell out.”

Being an ex-Michigander and still a Michigander at heart, the Judge holds a close place in my heart. I read his books as a kid and, like most who have read his work, wish for a time to share a few hours at Frenchman’s Pond with the old gem.
His work predates Geirach by decades. One can see a lot of Traver in Gierachs work. The big difference is what was in the ever-present tin cups!
