The Itinerant AnglerHey guys –
I just thought I would point out the unusual layout Phil agreed to in the most recent American Angler for my article, “Cooking Up Some Lines.”
Here’s the layout:

Lauren and I made this picture in our basement. We were having a conversation about the pancake batter analogy used in the article to describe how PVC fly lines are made, and we were also needing to come up with a way to express that since our test images of just piles of lines were boring.
Lauren suggested setting the lines up like a stack of pancakes. I immediately called Phil, and we went from there.
This shot is a test shot which sort of illustrates how we set this up.

The trick is all about the level of lighting. With an all-white background and an all-white surface, if you set the aperture correctly and hammer out the right amount of light, you can blur the background while also blowing it out.
This shot had three separate strobes set up as well as a white ceiling bounce. There was a strobe hidden behind the table to blow out the white background. Then there were two additional strobes (all three were Nikon SB-600s operated wirelessly) on either side set up to bounce to the ceiling. We also had a big bounce card up there to direct a little more light on the front of each object.
The end result wasn’t perfect by any means. You can tell it is a little darker that the pure white page, for one. However, fortunately, in the printed version of the magazine this little shade difference is basically invisible due to the natural color of real paper.
Finally, once I had the shot we needed, I cleaned it up in Photoshop using the Select Color Range techniques I have described in the past.
I think it worked out and it is certainly unusual. Coupled with the really sweet Grossenbacher shot in the profile of Dave Kumlien (written by Phil), I think this is one of the edgier fly fishing magazine setups in recent memory.

MemberIs there an American Angler Branding, Layout and Standard’s Guide? I know many magazines have them but this could be a good way for some folks to submit a final article and fit the guidelines of the magazine. It would look great for the writer and be less labor for the Magazine.
I love the Layout.
