    I’ve been running a maxtor external firewire drive for the last 2 years, rarely turning it off, and i haven’t had any problems with it whatsoever.  I use it about the same as you, my backups run on it, and sometimes i move music or large amounts of photos on it.

    For what its worth, they probably both have the same hard drives in them.
