Ok well as most of you know I am new to tying and am trying to learn how to tie patterns. Here is my first attempt at a caddis pupa, and I would love yalls input on how I can make it better. Also my next question is im using dubbing for the legs, but what else could a use?

My only suggestion would be peacock herl instead of dubbing.

Thanks Abe for the help, I need to try that. The good news is I have a few weeks until I will need them so it gives me time to get them right.

Try any w/ peacock herl yet? They look good, but for me, the herl does not extend far enough to represent legs. Remember the naturals we pulled out downriver from Cold Hole?

If you’re looking for defined legs, have you considered something like one or two turns of starling feather (dark iridescent black) for legs?

    Abe,
Softhackles certainly do great where we are headed. You ever try any of the thin skin (I think that is what it is called) to make ribbed bodies? Maybe a better question would be what do you use for your pupa bodies?

    AO,
Great site and good lookin’ bugs; looks like a bit of work though. You ever tie any of those? Do pretty good for you?

Be aware that I’ve never fished caddis pupa, I’ve only tied up a mess of them for my brother who fished them for steelhead in MI.

I like the ice dub idea. I have tied buggers w/ it, but it got everywhere and I did not have real good results w/ it. But I think I will try it on the pupa. Thanks for the idea.

    DM,

I’ve tied many different forms of pupa before.

I keep hearing about coffee grinders…guess I need one now. Like I said though, I like your ideas. I’ll ask Nick to make some up!

We use the V-rib with consistent success, but most of what we hunt grew up in a hatchery.
