I’m trying to find a tripod for a new D50 I just purchased and was wondering if anyone had any advice to offer. I’ve read a lot of reviews online, but it’s only confused me even more on what I need. Everyone suggests avoiding the cheap tripods, but I’m hesitant to put down a lot of cash for a tripod when I have zero experience. I thought about a monopod, but I doubt I’d be able to keep it stable with longer shutter speeds.

I’m going to be strapping it to a backpack while I’m fishing and taking it along with me to Alaska while I’m guiding this summer. The only two lenses I have at this point are the D50 Kit Lens and a 50mm lens. I don’t anticipate buying any long-range zoom lens. I have little interest in taking photos of wildlife from a distance. The only requirement I can think of is that I’d like it in black. I’m one of the paranoid types who doesn’t like flashy items around fish.

Any suggestions? I really don’t want to exceed $100 on the tripod.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ian

    Ian –

This is one item you will quickly be upgrading if you only spend $100.

    Ian,

I agree with what Zach said- don’t skimp on the tripod- it’s not worth the frustration.

If you can live with an aluminum finish then this tripod: http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID23/16741.html
is a good deal and should work great for you.

If you can afford a graphite tripod they are great! I’ve lugged tripods around for a long time and they really get heavy. Ball heads flop around to much for my taste. I would rather have a locking handle for tilt swing and pan. I used a gitzo reporter paired up with a Linhof head or Bogen pan tilt head.

You may want to google for a Benbo pod- very versatile/beautifully made/did I mention very versatile out in the field?:)

The prob with most pods is that they have a design limit on how they can adapt to variable terrrain, inherent from studio /all three legs tied to stability ,designs. The Benbo is a field pod that looks to step out of the studio box- takes a little getting used too but a great pod
