Tripod head advice

Recieved a Manfrotto tripod over the holiday.
Alot will likely depend on the weight of your gear. In most instances, I prefer a ball head (manfrotto 486) with a QR. However with my 400+TC or my 180 f3.5 +1D the ball head creeps a bit and I really need to reef down on it so I use a traditonal 3 way ( their 804). When the day comes that I get a super tele like a 500 f4 or 300 f2.8 I’ll move to Wimberly products.
Best thing you could do is take your gear to your shop and test the mounts, you might find that a med ballhead like the 486 is all you need. Let the weight of your gear decide for you.

Like John said….probably depends on the weight of your lens. I use a a Jobu Designs gimbal type mount with my manual focus Nikon 400mm/3.5 lens….otherwise a small Manfrotto ballhead serves my purposes.
The Jobu seems to be well built and has served me well. It’s not quite as expensive as a Wimberly.
I would look at a good ballhead (I would buy the Kirk BH-3, if I were starting out right now, http://www.kirkphoto.com/ballheadbh3.html/url%5D) and the arca-swiss QR system. The pistol grip is fast and convenient, but is much too unstable when flopped over to the vertical position. The “3-way setup” I assume is the traditional pan/tilt head? Much much too slow and cumbersome for most outdoor photography situations unless you exclusively do landscape work.
