Was fortunate enough to make it out to Alaska for my second trip. My wife’s cousin was married last Saturday up there so we made it up for the wedding and then had some time to ourselves to tour around and fish. I could write for hours about it but will share with you a concise report or so. It’s hard to narrow it down!

The fishing was a little bit limited as I don’t know the area, wanted to explore a lot of new towns and was traveling light, but I still got in to some nice ones and had a blast. Your learn a whole lot every trip, things that can’t be read in a book, and that helps every future time. I can definitely see myself spending lots of time here in the future. Probably nothing like it in the lower 48 in terms of beauty, wilderness and accessibility.

We rented an RV and our itinerary over the 8+ days included Girdwood-Whittier-Seward-Cooper Landing-Homer-Hope. Or something along those lines.

The beauty is really remarkable. The weather is tricky – the first handful of days were 40 and rainy and then it warmed up a bit and the sun came out.

The beginning of the trip was family time – weddings, hikes, and hanging out.

We headed out of town afterward with some of the fam down to Seward for some offshore fishing. Our guides were fairly goofy, but good dudes. Our catches were mixed, with a few silvers, but nothing extraordinary.

On to the good stuff – fishing in Copper Landing on the Kenai. Had a super awesome guide – Dusty Byrd, the owner of AK Troutfitters.

Part 2 – made our way down to Homer. Saw some good catches come in but decided hiking and sea-kayaking would be a better way to see this great country. Halibut fishing looks cool but is ultra Expensive to do and ship home, and the limit was 2. Plus the scenery was too good to miss.

Weird and cool catches at the dock:

    Wolf Eel:

Beast Halibut (NOT MINE, JUST FOR FUN):

    Crab plus excellent brew (yum):

    Part 3 – Sea kayaking

Took an awesome drop off trip with kayaks deep into the Kachemak Bay with True North kayaking. Truly amazing. The Scenery was unbelievable and the tide pools were like the coolest aquariums in the planet.

Some cool spots to see on the way back. Fishing is everywhere.

    The end.

    Flight home was LONG!!!

    Bravo.  Well done.
Can you tell us a bit more about your time on the Kenai – what was your float – CL bridge to sportsman’s, sports to jims, did you get into the canyon?  Any big bows?  Did you eat those sockeye?  What was the bead of choice? “Details Jerry, I want details?”

Thanks. We floated from just above the ferry to Jim’s I believe.

Another guy in our party caught a nice bow and dolly in the mid-high” range near the end of the day but the pictures were a little washed out.

I kept one of the fresher sockeye and had it cooked for lunch the next day at a local restaurant – delicious.

Didn’t catch any fish on the bead, all came on smallish flesh flies.
