MemberI am looking to cut my teeth in the salt, say Galveston, Chorpus, whatever. This will have to be a suicide trip, meaning I will not have the time to go to the southernmost reaches of the coast, from Dallas. Should you be willing, could you pass info. pertaining to locale, flies, and places that are receptive to me sleeping in my jeep on the beach. And should any of you want to join, we could wear our IA shirts, hook the largest Bull Red known to man, maybe, and then the contest for best photo.

MemberIn terms of flies be sure to have clousers, bonefish sliders, a few spoon flies, shrimp and crab patterns, For top water try the V.I.P. foam popper.
For location, try Aransas Pass – either side of the causeway. On the North is Light House Lakes. It offers many sheltered pools and my be best if the wind kicks up. On the South side is B&R flats – another local hot spot. Easy car camping right off the road. Both spots are accessed by a very short kayak paddle. If you need one, rent your kayak here:

Good Luck!

MemberSpoon flies and seducers are all you will need.

MemberWhen I come down to Aransas, will I be targeting mostly Reds and Seatrout? Are there any other species available? What size fish are we talking about here?

MemberReds and trout for the most part. You’ll see tons of mullet that don’t tend to hit flies. Hard as it may be to walk away from a swirling school of fish, its a huge waste of time to cast to them…

MemberRedfish and trout for the most part, an occasional flounder, wading in the bays or the surf.

Memberdusty — I’m very impressed with this commando trip you’ve dreamed up. it sounds like a blast. I’m too much of a newbie on the coast to venture out quite like this, without a guide, so I am really interested to see how this plays out. when are you thinking about going?
I’ve had one experience on the coast for redfish and our guide wasn’t quite what he purported to be when I spoke to him on the phone. no flyfishing. it was a mightly hysterical day — if I can find an appropriate way to tell the story on my blog without offending my grandmother and being sued for slander I plan to. because we had a blast and the stories are riotous.
but a redfish on a fly still eludes me. am hoping to come down may-jun-july-ish so I’m sniffing about for good flysihing guides who are patient with saltwater newcomers. I worked with stacy trimble this weekend, so I know of her husband billy. someone else has mentioned fred lynch.
brett/stiles — any other names/thoughts/ideas …say if I wanted to do a trip slightly less independent than the one dusty is planning??
dusty — you just might have the drill figure out by then and can lead us all back down for an IA retreat. sound like a blast!!

You need to contact I-Fly The Anglers Edge in Houston and speak to the guys there about fly fishing guides and trips along the coast.

MemberChristine,
The date for said trip is yet to be determined. I still need to do some research, tie some flies, etc. So, knowing there were some on this board with infinitely more wisdom on this subject than me, I sent out some questions. I am guessing we will try to make it down sometime in April, +/- a month. But most importantly, I am waiting until I have saved enough dinero for a DSLR, which seems to be ever elusive.I heard you were here at Tailwaters this past weekend. How was the event?
Anyone heading to Athens this weekend?

Memberdusty — yes, I was at tailwaters this weekend. the event was great. really really great. stacy trimble was wonderful. the guys at the shop made everything so easy and fun. as those training things usually go, I began to realize I know nothing and have tons and tons to yet to learn. so it was worth every penny
and the group of women were awesome. great attitudes, lots of laughs, very focused
brett — THANK YOU. I was trying to come up with the name of that houston shop in the middle of the night recently and couldn’t think of it for the life of me. have never been there but hear it’s great. I am having such a love affair with my SIMMS gear bag… realize you can get them everywhere but I think mine came from that shop
I’m a long way from putting together a trip to the coast but am very bullish on the idea. starting my research. would love any info/thoughts you have Brett!! no rush, spring break starts for us this friday so I’ll be traveling for a spell
hope everyone’s having a great week. wish we were all redfishing on the texas coast
