Has anyone fished the Noth Fork in Missouri? I am thinking about going down and camping at the River of Life Farms and paying their access fee. I have heard fishing can be very tough there, especially for a newbie like me. Anyone have any tips?
This is probably one of my most favorite places to fish. The fishing might be tougher than your average tailwater in the south, but I think that is just because of the spooky wild trout. If you have good first presentations when nyphing you are sure to land some fish.
Jeff, Grant has given your some good advice. I’d add Myron and Anne McKee are some of the nicest folks you will meet. They will treat you right.
For tactics, be prepared for big weighted nymphs and buggers in the few heavy runs–especially there by the falls around Myron’s place. There are some big fish that live around those runs. Short of that, fish small late fall dark caddis (#18-20) and perhaps small blue winged olives, nymphs and dries in the gentle riffles and tailouts into the pools with an upstream presentation. Most of the fish in Missouri spring creeks are not picky on patterns but are much more so on presentation.
When you come back downstream switch to a softhackle and swing down and across.
Be sure to check with Myron and Brian on conditions a few days before your trip.

ScottOne thing to note is the fish I holding in my image to the left. That is actually a wild North Fork rainbow I caught 4 years ago. If you have never seen one there are some really good digital shots up on John Wilson’s board posted by Brian. The fish have bright orange pelvic and anal fins that are unique to the fish there.

River of Life is a great place to stay on the river and in a great location for the wading angler, but the best locations on the river are reached by floating.
