The Itinerant AnglerHey everyone –
I’ve decided to commit to paper my view of what this board will be, so everyone understands what the parameters of posting here are.

MemberCould you please elaborate on, “I have been breaking code among photographers who are attempting to “circle the wagons” against the oncoming digital wave of photographers” issue. I have made my living in photography for over 30 years and I am more than a little shocked that anyone would take issue with the full and free sharing of technique that I have seen demonstrated on this board. One of the greatest photographers I know of Ansel Adams said “I have no secrets of craft” and I feel the same way. Digital has changed things but compelling photographic content is what sells. Resisting the overwhelming tide of technology is futile. Embrace change, adapt and move forward.

The Itinerant AnglerHey David –
I will not elaborate except to say that a professional with years of experience and good name recognition made those comments to me via email.

MemberI was curious as to what sort of “code” exists.

The Itinerant AnglerThis is the first time I’ve been made aware of a “code,” too.

MemberThe more I think about this I would guess its about business practices. Most people starting out are just happy to get published, then they charge to little so they can compete with the established shooters. As they become established they start getting wise to the market and charge more for usage etc. There are good business practices like those advocated by the ASMP. If anyone is interested check out Photobyte by Tom Zimberhoff he can get you started right.

The Itinerant AnglerThat’s no doubt true generally, DMK, but I am fish and foremost a magazine photographer, and American Angler at least has a set schedule that they pay depending on the size of the photo.

MemberMore power to you Zach! I was addressing what I thought were the probable motives of the person who brought up the code. You are what I have heard called a Poly Media Content Creator. You write you shoot do podcasts and video. I wrote scripts for videos shot them and shot stills and even wrote some ad copy. When the Mac and digital video and still cameras came along it turned the creative world upside down. Everyone can be a photographer videographer editor or publisher. This threatens people stuck in old paradigms.
Being a Lawyer you would probably enjoy Tom Zimberhoff’s program its very legal and you can download and try it out at http://www.zimberoff.com/photobyte.htm. As you accrue images it will help you manage and license them. I used it when I had my own business. When you get to be 60 years you can live of your stock libraryNov 3, 2006 at 3:27 am #15214John Pavoncello
MemberZach,
One of the main reasons I joined this board it to find ways to expand my profession in photography. I’ve always wanted to fish and make a living doing it, and fly fishing photography is the way for me to do it (once I find some time to fish, let alone shoot photos for myself).
As for you getting letters about breaking the code, I think it is admirable that you are willing to help amateur and professional alike. The digital age has made it more difficult to find jobs in the photo world by creating more photographers, but, each of us has to make him/herself unique in the way we shoot and present our sport to be competative, not by outing inexperienced shooters.
To the “newbies” out there, Go for it!

Zach I am note sure if this quote above was intentional, but it sure put a smile on my face this morning!

MemberZach, as a newb to the board but not to fly fishing, I find your approach extremely refreshing. I post on several other boards of various kinds and to foster an open stance yet controlled is very nice.
Thank you for the great board.
