So I think I might end up in the bay area in late may and want to go trout fishing… Especially for browns and brookies or goldens because I’ve never caught a brown, golden or a brooky. I was thinking the Merced River up by yosemite because well I’ve also never been to Yosemite.

I would check with Kiene’s Fly Shop in Sacto.

The closest trout water to the Bay Area is Putah Creek.  It kind of strikes out on your dry fly/mountains/non-rainbow criteria but it is close enough to the Palo Alto to pull off a half-day trip…if you can find an open stretch (go early even on weekdays).

Patrick, I’ve not chimed in here as I have not done any fishing in the SF area. I live a few hours south of there in Fresno and have been fishing the Kings pretty regularly the last few months. In the summer, I tend to fish in the Shaver & Bass Lake areas most often. There are some fun creeks I started exploring last summer. Anyway, what got me to post here was the mention of Putah Creek. I have heard some very good things about that water. Unfortunately, a bad item to know about as well: it does have New Zealand Mud Snails. It is supposed to have some good fishing, just be aware of the snail issue. Where ever you end up fishing, I hope you have a blast.
